vince. _The science ol agriculture,
generally speaking, is more universal-
ly applied in the cultivation of the
soil than elsewhere in the province.
Practically all our farmers are prog-

that the Canadian Seed Growers' As-
sociation have received an initial push
and` an inspiration which has mad‘e for
u marvelous improvement along the
lines of good .seed all over Canada-
one of the very most important ele-
ments of successful agriculture.
The soil oi the county is remark-
able not only tor its fertility but for
the easy way in which it can be till-
erl.--a rich, sandy loam of a deep red
color, which it just sticky enough to
prevent. the pulverescent soil from
being disturbed by heavy winds, but
so soft and friable that the women
and' children- actually dig the potatoes
with their lender lingers, after their
being simply ploughed out. Generally
speaking, the soil is deep. which
makes it ‘ideal -for the growth of fruits
and vegetables. Flowers and foliage
grow luxuriantly. The average yield
.roi 'thaicountyi is'-greater than that of
any other part of Canada not only be-
cuse of the unique natural conditions
outlined abov_e,- but because the gen-
eral run of farmers -use better' seed
than elsewhere in the Maritime Pro-
vinces. as far as the writer knows.
except, perhaps, Colchester County,
N. S. Ad'd‘ed to the generous soil, the
scientific farming, and the example
of progressive neighbors, our climatic'
conditions are especially favorable,
as even the small distance between
tire- east end of the Island and the
west end of the Island there is a very
considerable modification in climate
both in winter and summer. as. may
be seen by referring t_o the lsotlre -
mal chart issued' by the meteorlogical
department. To make a long story
short, this county is almost ideal
from an agrlcllitural standpoint. The
hulk oi’ the county has natural drain-
‘age in a porous sub-soil underlaln by
a porous red sandstone rock. There
are some parts with a heavy clay
sub-soil almost impervious to water
where artificial drainage would make
‘rr nrarvaillous improvement, but of
this we wiill speak below.
During the past year, which has
been n fairly favorable one, an lm-
mense crop of potatoes, vegetables
and grain has been produced and'
with the high prices ruling the county
would' have surpassed all previous re-
cords 'of -prosperity but for the one
essential drawback oi' want of trans-
portation facilities. As early as the
25th day of September, (let me em-
phasize not October, not November.
but on the 25th day of 8eptember,)
the good old steamer Northumberland
was unable to' transport the freight.

left behind on that day 25 carloads _of
freight above her capacity, and' from
that day' forward, until the great In-
tercolonlal system on the mainland
was 'completely blocked for want."-of
cars, every day were left beihind,_not
25 carloads; but _hundreds of car-loads,

cept the box carloads discharged in-
to the steamers and vessels on any
given day.) every box car in the' prov-

railway authorities made every effort
to cope with the conditions, and did
wonderfully good work, but about this
