mk. ~ aden A Sketch of Leay. Siamese Dixie's | Life. IN Lady Florence Dixie's last contribu—} tion to the discussion of Lrish affairs in the public journals was a letter to the j London Times, dated March 8th, in| which she had charged that Messrs. Parnell and Biggar, as trustees of the} Land League funds, had failed to ac-} eount fer £152,000, and asserted that | they were mocking the sufferings ot | the Lrish pe ople by a sham champion- | ship of starving peasantry. Lady | Dixie isa sisterof the Marquis of| Queenberry, who rosein a Londoo|} theatre and denounced Tennyson's | latest play because of its treatment of | free thinkers. it was her father who gave his name to a codeot prize ring procedure, iler mother, who became a strong Irish Nationalist after the} death of this Marquis, sent a liberal} donation to the wite of the man who} assasaina'ed Talbot, the English de-| tective. To show his disapproval of this) the pe ‘eset Marq! lis, Lady Florence | Dixie's brother, gave four times the | gum to Talbot’s widow. Another of her brothers, Lord Archibald Douglas. devoted his time to reclaiming street| waits. While he wasin America on | | ; } ' j | cted with this charity | business conn he leit the orphanage in charge of al . ‘ ’ } sister, Lady Gertrude Douglas, and she} married the head baker of the orphan-| age, a youth of half her years, who| had been one of the or phans. Lady} Douglas and her husband are now run-| ing a bakery in London. Lady Elorenee Dixie is the young¢ st | of the eccentric fami ly. She married | in 1875, Sir Alexander Beaumont | Churchill Dixie, Bart. She is tamous| as a horsewoman, as a sailor, as a tra- veller, and as an impetuous writer, and Ww special correspondent in Zululand | for the Morning Post. InJIrish matters she has taken the} greatest interest. She got into con-| troversy with the ka and League by pub- lishing a pamphle ed ‘“ An Ad-| dress to the T enant 8 mers and People of Ireland, with Advice and Warning,” in which urged them to demand | irom the trustees a statement of the re- | ceipts and expenditures of the Leagues funds The League leader : torted by asking her through the /r/s a7 in if she had not been expelled from | the court of the Queen, and, if so, why. She wrote a letter of explanation, which | said that she had merely been repri. | manded by the Lord Chamberlain be-| cause she went to court with no feathers | in her hair. To her recent charge that £152,000 = of the Land League fuads were not accounted for, and that} £93,000 had been used to promote the the commission of outrages in Ireland, | Treasurer Egan of the Land League replied that she was crazy after noter- iety, and thut she had become the! mouthpiece of Richard Pigott, formerly | editor of the Jrishman. This man, Mr. Egan said, had failed in an attempt to} blackmail ‘the League, and then, in re- venge, wrote a pamphlet, in which he claimed to give transcripts of the League accounts. Lady Florence Dixie had this pamphlet printed, but became trightened aftera dozen copies had been bound, and had about all of them | destroyed. Mr. Egan says he has one| of these pamphlets, and that her recent | charges are based on the figuresin that | She had been liberal in gifts of money and laber for the relief of starv- ing Irish peasants. Two young men, while paying a visit | toa lady, observed her son busy over his copy book, learning to write, He was at the stage of penmanship when the hand is trained not to form entire| letters, but only the loops and curves, bair-strokes and down-strokes. One of the young men eet his friend that he could make million such ‘ ' a loops in} fifteen as Tae bet—1,000 louis— |} was accepted and the young man ret to! work next day. Witnesses were on | hand, and each evening the number of | loops made during the day were | counted. At the en d of eight days the | foolish youth bad made 590,000 loops ; but suddenly Writer’s cramp’ attacked and ankylosed the middle sui ‘ndex fingers of his hand. In _ of advice he persisted in contiouing. the sight of the strokes upon the ape r| + began to turn his brain. On the 14th! day he gave up. He laeked 187,000) loops to make u up the million.
