Many will recall with regret that Mr. Dickey’s life was suddenly cut off a few months ago. This time the Conservative Leader is as- sociated with Hon. George Eulas Foster, who enjoys the distinction of being pro- bably the foremost platform orator and debater of his party. There is no greater master of English speech than he among our public men, and few ‘if any who have made themselves more thoroughly in- formed in regard to our public affairs. And yet he is less magnetic than his lead- er, or than many upon both sides of the H>u;e, and his splendid intellectuality is p :rhaps less persuasive than that of other public men of lesser note. Sir Charles is always confident in him- self and his party. By this we do not mean that he assumes a confidence which he does not feel. We doubt not he really believed he would carry the country in the election of 1396. That he failed then detracts nothing from his confidence on the pres~ ent occasion. It is of the very essence of political leadership to be optimistic. The party leader who would tell his followers on the eve of an election that their chances were not good, would find himself sp :ed- ily left without a following. And it is to be said of Sir Charles that he never sinks under reverses. When the anti-Confeden tes swept his Province in 1867, leaving him alone among the representatives of his party in the Commons, his indomitable will was not broken nor his confidence shaken. sf ,min was eating.
