Its motto is ‘The Dominion by Laurier and the Province by Mercier.” Think of that ! —Commenting upon the situation in Quebec, brought sbout by Laurier’s friend, the Montreu] Gazette saya: **The greatest strain that can be put upon the conatitu- tion is to make it @ shield for alot of pub- lic pluuderers. Keep the rascals out.” —The Montreal Gazette says that if the Ottawa Free Press tells the truth, which is not always the case, Mr. Thoinas Me- |Greevy has deen making threats as tu dis- closures he will make if the Government suits against him are not withdrawn. Nevertheless, the suits wil! yo ahead. —The Ottawa Journal says: **When the notorious Rykert, after expulsion from Par- ,liament, blustered that he would tell ail he knew, Sir John Thompson challenged him to go ahead, and Rykert couldn't. Sir John should challenge the Hon. Thomas 'McGreevy.” Is not that criminal prosecu- tion challenge enough for the Journal ? A Quebec correspondent says that it has been remarked that while L’Electeur has been publishing opinions from all parts of the country on the constitutionali*y of the dissolutioa, it has not yet secured the views of the learned gentleman in the lower prov- inces to whom Pacaud so generously sent $5,000 out of the boodle to help him to re- jturn the followers of Mr. Laurier at the last general election ! —Montreal Gazette : According to Mr. On account of the prevalence of diph theria Colvilie School has been closed sine: the 20th inst. McFarlane, chief Government analyst, the l:quor Canadians drink is generally unadul- terated. If this is correct a fresh load of evil has been heaped on old King Alcohol’s burdened shoulders. It has been a pet theory in many minds that poisonous adul- terants were the chief cause of the mischief laid to John Barleycorn’s charge. Farlane would have it that whiskey is its OWN poisoner. ree A Brilliaat Scholar. ene een: DR. SCHURMAN, OF CORNELL, WHO SPOKE IN BUFFALO ON FRIDAY. (Buffalo Express. ) Prof, Jacob Gould Schurman, whose por- ‘trait is printed to-day, was the honored guest on Friday of the Liberal Club of Buffslo, before which he spoke on ** The Evolution of Religious Belief.” He is a remarkable man, whose books and work at Cornell University have already made him well known to many Buffslo people, as well as to the world of scholars in general. Since 1886 he has been Professor of Phil- osephy at Cornell, and since 1890 Dean of the Sage School of Phil. sophy there. He is also editor of the Philosophical Review, the first number of which appears on January Ist next. | Dr. Schurman seems to be the incarna- tion of energy. In addition to his college work and his editoria: labors he has found time to contribute to the Forum, Andover. | Review and foreign periodicals, and to |write three schoiarly books which have jranked him high among thinkers. They ‘are: “*Kantian Ethics and the Ethics of; Evolution,” ‘**The Ethical Import of Dar- | winism,” and ‘ Belief in God.” How Dr. Schurman managed to take active part in’ ithe last political campaign, and make ' numerous addresses and lectures, is past} finding out, but he did it somehow. It is a peculiarity of the period that the young men are winniug poritions wuich would have been thought far out of reach to them a generation ago; and Dr. Schurmin is an illustration of this fact. He is only 37, even younger than the new president of Chicego University, who was recent'y in-; trocuced to Express readers. But such} ‘high honors come only through indomitable} perseverance and grit as can be eeen, ior instance, ia Dr. Schurman’s college career. He his made his own way in the world evec since leaving his home on a farm in Prince Edward Island at the age cf 12, He was clerk in a general store for the next three years, making money enough to, ;teke him to an academy and start him on’ j his way to a college in Nova Scotia. In 1875} ihe won the Canasian Gilchrist scholarship | , years later he graduated at the University }of London with the university scholarship ($250 per annum for three years) in phii- osophy. He was first man in Greek, Mng- lish, logic, philosophy, and politcal economy, winning in the latter a acholar- ship of $100 per annum for two years. In 1877-8 be was a student in Paris and Edinburgh, taking at Edinburgh the doctor's degree in philosophy. He was tho only euc- cessful candidate of the five who applied In June 1878 he won the Hibbert Fravelling Fellowship ($1,000 per avnum for two years), which is open to graduates of all British universities, and wae competed for by over 60 men fiom Oxford, Cambridge, Dublin, Edin burgh, etc. He spent the next two yeere ceadteies as Hibbert Fellow at Heidelberg, Berlio, and Gottingen, as well as in Italy. From 1880 to '82 he was professor of English literature, political economv and pyschology at Acadia college, and from 1882 to 86 pro- fessor of metaphysics and English literature in Dalhousie college, Nova Scotia, In 1885 he joined the faculty of Cornell. Prof, Schurman is no ascetic in spite of his attainments, and asseita himself as a min and a citizen. He gave the oration at Ithaca on the fourth of July last, and the oration to tne laborers on labor day. He has given college ' commencement orations at Smith, Wellesley, the University of Ohio, ctc., besides lecturing in different churches on religious and practical themes, Most Cases of consumption are of catarrhal origin, and death tollows inevitably.
