It may prove suggestiv the address of your ofllcers. 3. Some' suggestions were mad for changes in legislation. These wil may have to oder. 4. The most important step taken was the decision to engage a field secretary for six months tentatively if a suitable man can be secured and if the decision' of the meeting is sup- ported- financially by the friends of tcmperance. The conviction of the ing unanimity, that the. usefulness of the Alliance depended largely on hav- ing u secretary \vho_ could give his whole time to prosefiuting the work in ull its phases. A finance commit- tee'was appointed and tbeyi will as- certain how far ,this conviction is shared by the general public. We have in the churches and schools the most ample machinery for educational work but as a matter cf inet there 'are too many communities in which little educational work is being done. Could the secretary draw more of the power of this splendid machinery in- to the fight against tempernnce? We have already a great' deal of public sentiment. against -the liquor traffic. Could -he bring that sentiment to bear unitedly _against _the traffic as it does not now? Could lie bring about convictions for illicitsnles wihere we only bring about grum- blings and mutual reproach. But you should soon hear _from.the finance committee. What. the Alli- ance can do will depend on your re- sponse to them. The Alliance is nothing apart from the churches and the temperance societies which are invited to co-operate in it. If the churches desire to co-operate in the iight against the liquor traffic and are willing to contribute the modest sum of fifteen dollars per congrega- tion they cnn easily check the pres- ent free flow of this poison. But if the churches do not wish to co-oper- ate then there is no Alliance and the 'outlook for "temperance is by no moans bright. “rue moi; cnet the me meeting was the. largest for some years assures us of awakened inter- est. More active work is being . re- ported from different quarters. These are indications that we may think it worth the while to do this work. The dangers 'are that we may. each leave it to some one else and that we have not enough faith in each other to co-operate. ` G. ~A. SUTHERLAND. Kensington, Nov. 12th, 1912.
