journal. The stereotypers had even-
tually to yield to the proprietors and
the day on which the papers reap-
fpeared was one of rare enthusiasm in
the windy city.
Adouble-horse wagon is _being pre-
pared for the United States; war de-
paptment which will work a great im-
provement in telegraphic communica-
.tion from battlefields to army head-
quarters. This wagon has four folded
tables, which when thrown up, form
desks upon which are placed a set of
telegraph and telephone inst-ruments.
Batteries are carried beneath the
seat, while the coils of wire are so ar-
ranged as to be strung out as fast as
the wagon can be drivcn. The wagon
is intended to be followed by a heavier
vehicle containing lances, spare coils
of wire, and even sections of submar-
ine cables, so that no obstacles to
telegraphic communication will be af-
forded by a considerable stream of
water. The wagons will be sent to
the front as rapidly as possible.
In addition to Emperor William’
gift of 10,000 marks to the American
and Spanish Red Cross Societies, the
Empress of Germany has sent 1,000
marks and the ex-Empress -Frederick
has contributed 500 marks.
There has been less talk of late re-
garding the selection of a premier.

meeting of the party will be held for
that purpose either this week or early
next week. '

were busy days for both students and
instructors, class work became more
and more intense, examinations were
searching and many students suc-
ceeded in obtaining good results. `_.
Excellent work nas been done in the
department of zoology and entomology
under the direction of W.A. Hickmen,
Esq. of Picton and F. A. Dixon, M. A.,
of Sackville. The work was divided
into the three sections of lectures. la-
boratory work and iield work. ln the
lectures zoology, in its relation to other
national sciences,-proloplasm-the
kinds and functions ot cells and cellular
tissue-the functions of animals in na-
ture,-the structure of the lower ani-
mals compared with human|s1ructure,-
the unity existing in the variety of
forms found is animals,-and how to
ed.
In the laboratory Work the external
and internal anatomy of animals were
examined, using a typical form of each
of the following orders :-A radiate. a
mollusk, a. lish, an anipbilian, an _ anth-
ropod, a bird, a ,mami_nal,~ together
withsome peculiar forms. Some alco-
holic specimens and skeletons were also
studied. In the dissection the muscular,
nervous, bony, digestive,circu1atory and
respiratory systems were examined.

In the field work as many as possible
of our native animals were classified-
iheir food, habits, habitats, and relation
to humnn Welfare studied.
Under the head of entomologvinstruc-
tion was given in insect life-their form
and structure, metamorphoscs, modes
of development, food, habits, habitats

l was given to those' injurious to fruits,
etc., also to :heir 'usefulness in nature.

An interesting visit was made to the
railway shops and much valuable infor-
mation obtained. Mr.Hall,toreman of

ly attentive and gave full and clear ` ex-

America” by W. A. Hickman of Picton
formed the subjects of the last two
round table talks. Mr Hickmen illu-
strated his talk by numerous drawings
on the blackboard. His discription of
the- different families of birds, their
habits and peculiarities, and how
they _ were to be distinguished
waspartioulatly interesting aswell as
instructive. Healso gave an account
of his rather thrilling experiences on his
tripinsearch of birds. One year he

Friday was l_h_e day, for the written,
which is the first part of the examina-
tion. For examination purposes, the
work in each Natural Science
subject
is divided into three sections of cqualft
value. (1) Whitten examinations on
prescribed text-book and lectures. (2) 7
Practical and original work, such as
dissecting, experimenting. etc, in the
laboratory. (3) Collections made in`
the field work, mouniings of same and
apparatus. The purpose of. this ar-
rangement is' to lay the chief stress on
real knowledge of a practical character,
rather than on knowledge derived chief-
ly from textbooks.
With the close of the examinations
on Friday the session of 1898 ended.

ready being made. The Natural His-
tory Socieiies of New Brunswick and
Noga Scotia are expected to meet with
_ the Summer School of Science at Camp-
bellton. P. E. Island Natural History
Society is to be invited.

Teachers of both N. B. and N. S.
form clubs in which the Summer School
of Science subjects are discussed and
_ studied during the interval between the
session of the school. _
Attendance at the school this year'
was not quite so large' as _last year.
The meeting of the Dominion Teacher's
Association which meets at Halifax,
August the 2nd to 5th, interfered with
the attendance. Many teachers with
their small salaries could not afford to
attend both, and the Dominion Associ-
ation only meets ini the Maritime
‘Provinces ab out once in ten years while
the Summer School meets 'every year,
many elected to go to Iialifax this
year. -
In no-year of the Summer School’s
history' has there been better work
done, or more enthusiastic and diligent
students.
The excessive heat feared by many
in coming to Moncton was not experi-
enced. the weather was exceptionally
coo. and fine.
The Monctonians vied with each
ether, in their attentions to the Sum-
mer School, the _weather and people
seem to have combined tomade the
meeting agreeable. The 'only disappoint-
ment was the bore which appeared
to have the sulks. It did not show
more than a foot of a rise at 'any time
after the first night ofthe school.
We hope that the representatives
from PE I who goto the Summer
take an invitation with. them from the
Board of Education. The Board of
School Trustees of Charlottetown-.-the
'Major and City Council backed with
-and we feel safe in predicting' that the
session of 1.900 will be held in Char-
lottetown. ~
