TBAINOB. l ing great and ,most successful work. llr Miller and Mr Trainer de not come here telling what fine fellows they are, and what excellent students they are turning cut, but it is their diploma which they speak ef. The diplomas which are granted by an independent boby as' mentioned by hir Trainer-I know that these are indlsputable and unquestionable evidences that the work which is dons here is ct a very high character Now I look upon this institutional occupying a position in this province which until lately was the cniyinstitn- tion which we could classify as partak- ing of the character of a technical school. Here young men and women are prepared for professional work so that they may enter places ef business and practice the occupation by which they are.to make their life work. We have a little of the technical character introduced into our ordinary school in- struction--we have manual training, we have nature studies, etc, which per- tsinmore tothe business of life than the ordinary school work. I wish to impress the fact upon you that there is one word which has been very much misused, very much mlsappiied in a sense which is absolutely wrong. I will show you that it is wrong. It is the word Puac'ucIL.of which I want to diiiabuse your mind. Even to be able to read well in our ordinary school curriculum is. I should say, one of the must practical things that any young man or young woman can accomplish. te be able tc read not only with satisfaction to those who listen to them, ~b_nt read with clear enunciation. I should say that this is a very practical result if you can reach it. _ _ There is enclher mntter which I should say is a very practical thing, and I think Mr-Miller will agree with me. lt is in reference to ordinary writing. I want the writing tn he perfectly clear and distinct. Good writing is writing that is easily rand. It makes a man happy ie receive a letter which is well written. No man has _time to sit down to decipher a letter which is like n conundrum to him te solve. A letter he can read at a glance he can answer at once. I have been reading examination papers lately and can toil you there _were some ef them badly written- terrible writing--I should say if o fly dipnsd tts__iegs in the ink and started over the paper he would dc as well. ' New, I say that nobody has any business to write _such 'it paper as that. It is one of the objects in our schools te produce good writers. _If that were done Mr Miller would have no need to»tesch writing andlinuld take up the matters ol' bueinees.`~~' ‘ '1‘h`eie_ is another point which I want to make imrpiessive. und that _is correct spelling. 1 omatter-_ how well a letter is written, if there b`e a glaring mis- spelling in the middle of it, it is that which-_ attracts your attention. The better it is written, tiie_mnro glaring the blunder will appear. Your eye will st'ck to that misspelling, and you forget all the rest. I say that the man who can make good readers, writers and spoilers, is n practical teacher. There is another thing which! urge in the public schools and that is compos- ltien. I am eudeavoring to get boys and girls te put their thoughts in plain sim- pie _words to form sentences, and bring sentences together to form paragraphs. etc. Imust say we are progresslngin that. I think if we can make good cem- pesers.l!o0d plain writers without blund- ers ln grammar we have achieved s practical result. What would be more practical than a good knowledge of geo- graphy altd history. Without geography in this Institution and s knowledge ef the `variens'cenntrles, and how products are te be obtained from these countries, where certain manufactures are carried on, and hc_w they ure' to be obtained from thase centres I would say amcst important part of -_your business educa- t.l0h li neglected. eopie will say,_Ohi you are s unning the qusktlen of the classics.. What about Latin and Greek? I am not afraid tc tickle that qnesticn.A right thorough training in classics leads to ci it of the highest results that is young man er woman can expect to re'-*-_h ifrproperiy done. - Tie commercial education that Mr Miller and Mr Trainer give here. if it is ' et thoroughly and intelligently done, the verifsct that it is commercial does not ina e it thoroughly practical. 'It ls when the 'work is properly done that it ll Practical. By training in these things you come to get a mastery of your own language you get not only te know words hut you knew why you should select one word in preference te another, and know the rea- son why you dc lt. If you are translat- ing from one language to another yen must know the exact meaning that it conveys in its language and you must ex- press 'thstlu the idiom of your own. The greatest an'd noblest men that the world has ever seen are the men who have been fed from classical sources. It was the tlrst individual food that they par- teok_ef and they stuck to it to the end. New, ladies and gentlemen, I did not intend to say all that when I stood up, but I thought I would ju~t like to say another word. Remember that you must not only know what you have gslnedlierebnt you must continue to o- osed from this stand-point, as lr Hiller said; "You must net consider that yon have ended, butthat you have begun, and th1tyou are pnt in the way of doing scmeth ug for yourselves with the help of other-r," I am exceedingly obliged to you Kr 0hainnan,.snd this audience. and again Iesprqss my appreciation of the work done _here and Ill! greet.
