THE HUNTERS’ CORNER llNG-NIOIID PKIAIANTI Reports coming in from inter- ested farmers and sportsmen in- olicate many lsrge and thriving of ring-necked pheasants a in nus south and cost of Char- lottetown. On Thursday, Babe Wood, Alexandra, reported s flock of 1'! pheasants that visit the farm buildings regularly for their feed of grsin. A covey of 14 Hungar- ian partridge have their head- qunrtns in s field several hundred yards south of the farmyard. Al- though the winter to date he been favourable two of these part- ridge are reported somewhat "droopy". rhe balance of the icovey appear in good conditio so the pair in question may be suf- fering from some sickness or old age. Earlier in the week s oovey of 3d Hungarian partridge and 41 pheasants were reported on the premises of Leo Frank, Rosebank. All these birds apparently were taking the winter so far in their stride. Since pheasants have become accllmstised they have stood up during several inclement winters .bettcr than the Hungarian part- ridge. winters during which the partridge suffered heavy mortal- ity. ing-necked pheasants were iirst introduced in this province in 191B by the late William Jenkins, Seal River (Vernon P.O.). The birds came from British Columbia nnd were forwarded to Mr. Jenk- ins by his son Max, who at that time was Mayor oi Kelona in the Okanogsn Valley. The pheasants were liberated in the Seal River district and for two years multi- plied rapidly. However, an ex- ceptionally severe winter of heavy frosts and deep snow followed two favourable seasons and the birds disappeared with the excep- tion of the odd male. A few years later the late Robert Jenkins. Mount Albion. s brother of Wil- iliam, attempted to stock his dis- trlct by hatching eggs from pheasants imported from Ontario. and liberating the chicks after they hsd reached maturity. ults were sfter the pattern of River attempt, disappointing in the extreme. Some yeirs later Robert Shaw. Brackley Beach. raised and re- leased pheasants in the Brackley area. For several years it looked us if the venture was going to succeed, when presto the birds vanished. Where the fall before there were flocks close to 40 birds, by the following spring they were practically non-existent. Later, two Charlottetown sports- men, "Duck" Acorn and Doctor Hector McKenzie, spent a consid- erable sum in raising and liberating pheasants. The birds were re- leased for the most part in the Langley and Keppocli area. Slight results were obtained from these plantings and it was considered n foregone conclusion that the rin - necked easant was doomed o be a faiure in this province.
