S_‘Hers.Id, was recent Royal Society. C . is engaged in a scientific v ugoan among other subjects he was particularly enjoined to endeavour ti‘ rtbld’ occasions to ascertain the count ofa deep sea sounding Ill 7,‘l0tl fa- thoms, In lat. M19 8 and long. 87 6 \V. The sounding was obtained on a calm day, Oct. 3!, I852, on the passage from Rio de Jaitsiro to the Cape of Good Hope The sottudinglitte Ivas.l-I0th ofan inch in diamet- er, laid tuteona length, and weighing, when dry, I lb for every hundred fathoms. Capt Dunhaus received from Corn. McKeever, of the United States’ Navy, commanding the Congress frigate, l5,000 fathoms of this lino, I0,0tl0 on one reel and 5000 on another. The plummet weighed 9 lbs., was II inches long. and I-701 of an inch in diameter. When 7,706fathoms had run olfthe reel, the sea bottom was reached. The plummet was drawn up several times 50 Iathoms; and after it had renewed its descent, it stopped abruptly at the original mark to a fathom and would not take another turn olI'the reel. The whole time taken by the plummet in descending to this amazing depth, 7.7 geo- raphical miles of 60 to a degree, was 9 ours minutes and 45 seconds. The highest utunmits of the Himalaya are little more than %,000 feet, or 4.7 geographical miles above the sea The sea bottom has therefore depths greatly exceeding the ele- vation ofthe highest pinnacle above its sur- ce. at care was taken to show the nature of the bottom, but in reeling in, the liuebroke at I40 fathoms below the water line, carrying away a thermometer which had been attached to it at 3,000 fathorns. This sounding is the deepest that has ever been made on 'any previous occasion. Wiuow’s Dowuri.--The Legislature of North t‘arolina has passed a law rovidiiig that when a man dies intestate, leaving a widow and no child or children, the widow is to have one-lialf his personal estate. If the husband rnakesawill, and the widow dissonts therefrom, she is to receive one- third, as heretofore. A Fae-r roit Fiasrcas.—Dr. R. T. Bald- win haa made public the result of several yours investigation and experiments upon manures, and vai-ions ways of fertilizing the sci . He states that the best and speediest way to fertilize any soil, is to cover it over with straw, bushes, or any raw material, so astocoutpletely shade it. The surface ofthe earth thus being made cool, dark, dump and close, soon undergoes a chemical process like putrefactiori, and becomes highly ferti- lisetl. This plan of fertilizing, he says, may be applied with success to any soil whatever, no matter how poor, and the result will be astonishing. The "North Pacific fleet, of I853, of Ame- rican wb ers, it is now ascertained, com- prise not less than $6 ships. This number exceeds that of any previous year, except 1346, when the fleet consisted of 296 ships. Irrrcrtssrtivo not-s.—Man has the -power of initiating almost every motion but that of ' In: - To efect these he has, in maturity and health, 60 bones in his head, 60 in his thi he and legs, .62 in his arms and hands, ml 67 in his trunk. He has also 434 muscles’. His heart makes 64 pulsations in a minute, and therefore, 3840 in an hour, 92,160 in a day. There are also three .coiupletu circulations of his blood in the short space of an hour._ In respect to the comparative speed ofanltnated beings and of impelled bodies it may be remarked, that size and construction seem to have little ioliience, nor llltl comparative strength, though one hody'givl_ng any quantity of motion to another ll said to lose so much of its own. The sloth is by no means a small animal, and yet it can travel only iices in a ay; a worm crawls only5 inches in 50 seconds; but a Iadybird can fly 20,000,000 times its own length In less than an hour. An elk can run a mile and a half in seven Iltiuutas; an antelopeamile in a minute; wildtnulu of'I‘artary has a speed even ter than that. An eagle can tly 18 eagles in an hour, and u Canary falcon can even reach 950 leagues in the abort space of 118 hours.-A violent wind travels 6) utilegiip an hour; sound 1142 English feet in a second.
