Tus thermometer registered half adegree below freezing point last night; and there was white frost upon the ground this morning. In this city, vegetation does not seem to have been effected. We have not yet heard how the frost effected the coun- “J. An adept in ocean travel urges those who fear sea-sickness to take a ten-grain blue pill the night before sailing, and a dose of citrate of magnesia the following morning. Then eat breakfast and go on board. He has followed this practice for several years, and beon entirely free from qualms. All those who have imitated have been equally fortunate. On Sunday afternoon one of the patients in the small-pox hospital at Ottawa escaped and made a race down to the Rideau River, being followed by an attendant, who succeeded in capturing him just as he reached Cumming’s bridge. The patient, who is a young man, had become delirous from his sufferings, and siouted as be ran down towards the bridge. His face presented a revolting appearance, being covered with large blotches. A step toward alleviating one of the great- est annoyances of travelling has been made in the invention of a device for preventing the of escaping steam, consisting substantially in discharging the steam through a small cham- ber filled with glass or metal beads. The beads are from a 1-4 to 5-16 of an inch in diameter, held in place by copper gratings, and, in finding its way through the tortuous and freely, but with little back pressure. Henry Warp Bercuer, who will accom- pany the Brooklyn regiment, as its Chaplain to Montreal this week, to take part in the celeBfation of the Queen’s Birthday, was last Sunday announced to preach next Sunday morning in the St. James’ Street Methodist Church, Montreal. The minister making the announcement warned the weak members of the congregation liable to fainting fits te ab- sent themselves on the occasion. Itis not very probable, however, that there will be many absentees, though the caution was a wise one. Minino 1x NewrounpLann.—Mr. Ellers- hausen commenced operations in Bett’s Cove in 1874. In four years he raised 102,400 tons of copper ore, value £512,000 or $2,248,000; and in the iast two years he paid in wages $409,600. Tilt Cove Mine, owned by Messrs. Bennet and McKay, was opened in 1864. In twelve years the value ef the ore shipped from this mine was £223,840. Very rich deposits have recent- ly been discovered at Tilt Cove, while the old workings show no signs of exhaust- tion. It is stated in Ottawa, in well-informed circles, that Sir John A. McDonald, Hon. Dr. Tupper and Hon. Mr. Tilley are all ex- pected to visit England during the coming summer. Sir John goes home to be sworn in of Her Majesty's Privy Council, and it is even hinted that some further honors will be conferred on bim. Hon. Dr. Tup- per goes home in connection with the Pacitic Railway policy, and Mr. Tilley in reference to the Dominion finances. It is said that Dr. Tupper will leave at an early day, but nothing definite on the subject is known. A poor Hungarian lately showed a black pearl to a Pesth jeweler, and begged him to value it and give him what he could for it. He was told that the pearl was of great value, and that he had better take it to Biederman or Vienna, which he did, and was naturally asked where he had obtained possession of such ararity. The Hungarian answered that he had got it from the valet of the late Count Louis Batthyani. It turned out that it was one of three black pearls which, more than 150 years ago, were stolen from the English crown, and which were for a long time vainly sought for, it being at that time supposed that these were the only three black pearls in exist- ence. Hanpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont.:— Dear Sir—It is now two years since your ‘Constitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me. FE have waited this ong te see if the cure would remain permanent before do- fing this, my duty, to you, as at-first the happy effe cts seemed to me to be ‘too good ‘te true.” : oud... I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular J saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying dong, I would feel like suotee res be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When ‘your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, | secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any siice until of late I have taken some for a cold in 1ny head. A sensé of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prom me to send. you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper. Yours truly, W.
