Mr. John Campbell of the mar- ine committce referred to the sec- tion in the brief prepared by the Associated Boards of Trade of Prince Edward Island and present- ed to the Royal Commission on Transportation which dealth with the condition of the Marine Wharf in Summerside. Mr. Campbell said he was sorry he did not know about this section being included because he contended that it was erroneous. ‘ The section referred ta is as fol- low: "The Summerslde Board 0f Trade submits the necessity of general pier and harbor improve- ment-s to increase the capacity and efficiency of the excellent harbor at S“ erside and refers specific- ally to the condition of the wharvee which are now unsafe and unfit for traffic. Motor vehicles carry- ing loads of produce to the ware- houses on these wharvel cannot safely proceed with full loads and are compelled to put off part of their loads before venturing oln to these wharves. In order to remedy the conditions complained of im- mediate improvements are requir- ed to be made." Mr. Campbell contended that the report was erroneous and that the Marine Wharf was in excellent condition, that there was not an- other one in the Province that can handle produce so expedit- iously. Mr. Campbell pointed out that in the but year who 10w‘ thousand tom of fertilizer had passed over the wharf which would indicate it to be in a sound condi- tion. Mr. Campbell admitted that the approaches to the wharf were very bad but he said that this was the obligation of the Canad- ian National Railway to repair. l-le contended furthermore that claims S’Side Marine Wharfl Discussed At Meeting duties, He felt that the Board had were fortunate in securing her ser- vices. being disposed of the meeting ad- journed. — S Housing Construction To , Begin At S’Side Monday set. Mellish did not ag- ree with Mr. Campbell's claims as to the condition of the wharf. Mr. Mellish said he had recently gone over it and that he considered it. to be in a disgraceful condition and that spikes were protruding through the planks in some places as much as three inches. Regarding Mr. Camp- bcll‘s statement that the loads car- ried to the wharf by the shippers were too heavy, Mr. Mellish con- tended that the wharf should be so constructed that it would bear any load conveyed over the public highways.
