British Investigators Advance Arguments Claiming They Are Not. The scarlet uniform of the British in- fantry has been greatly criticised in re- i cent years, chiefly on the ground that it exposes the men to needless danger by Gisclosing their whereabouts to the enemy. The objection taken to the scar- let, however, is groundless, and scientific reasons are given why the prevailing color is for ali purposes the most suitable that could be selected. In the first place, scarlet affords the best attainable protection against the extremes of heat and cold to which sol- diers are Jiable to he exposed. The darker the color protecting ® Warm body, the more rapidly radiation proceeds. White would be the best color to reduce racia- tion to a minimum; bat white is burred hy other considerations, as are also all the grays. Scarlet or red comes midway between white and black or other dark colors, while with reference to protection from the sun scarlet takes a far hizher place than any of the blue, greens or drabs and other shades often used for military clothing. Yellow or orange is excluded because these colors are particularly conspicuous at a long distance. Although scarlet or red is more conspicuous than gray, when the sun shines directly on the troops it blurs on the sight, and is consequently more difficult to nit. Then little dread of the - possibly he feels a obeah man himself—such is the forca of? | association, When the obeah is set for a colored: man the mode of operation Js simple. One of the most frequent complaints in. | the country districts is dysentery, and. the obeah man can produce all the syinp- toms of dssenterr in a whole family: without difficulty. small quantities of pounded glass with their food, and, if this is continued iong enough, the result is death. The symp-- toms are so nearly like those of dysentery that nothing short of an autopsy will reveal the truth, so- the prisoner goes unpunished. The first warning a colored man receives is usually the finding of a little packet in his bed, or any place where he is sure to find it, containing a tooth, a bit of glass and a few hairs. This is sometimes. varied with a bottle containing parts of’ — nail and. | unlesss he is. | a toad, a spider, some rusty dirty water. The black, more than usually intelligent, gives him self up for lost when he finds these things. He knows that sickness or death will overtake himself or some of his: family, or at least that his donkey or his: | poultry will die. Some of the obeah men. draw the line short of actual killing. Father Murphy, of Gold Cure fame, ar- rested in Montreal recently, has beeu re~ jeased on $4,000 bail, It is done by mixing: | > ai. With existing rifles the actual result of a fight is usualiy decided at a distance just outsidy the effective range of the weapons, This distance lies between 600 and 800 yards. Nearer than that if is impossible to close without replying to the enemy's fire, and as soon as the re- turn rifle whistles about the defender’s heads the possibility of aiming rapidly and accurately decreases. .. Therefore, from this point of view, it is unimportant whether the object to be hit is conspicuous or not, but from a mora! point of view it is a serious con- sideration, Within 700 yards each subse- quent adyance is conditioned by fire- superiority already achieved; the defend- ers are shaken; the time for counting heads is past, and the mental impression conveyed by the ¢ight of the assaulting troops becomes the main point. It is a distinct advantage thatour men should bulk large in the decisive stages cf an encounter, and there is no color which enables them to do this so effac- tively as scarlet. On the whole, therefore, every scientific consideration justifies the retention of scarlet as the best uniform fer our troops. —Pearson’s Weekly.
