They didn't scare, They continued to stand and stare most impoiitely. so it was that mother continued to bring them back to that little pond deep in the Green Forest for their evening drink. Never had they visited it. in the daytime. But at last came 1 day that was unusual- ly hot. Mother Ligihtfoct was H1051. unoomdartable. The twins were most uncomlortable. They lay hid- den in ii thicket. Not a single Mer- ry Little Breeze was moving. The rawns panted for breath Never. never in thir short lives had they been so uncomtortablc . How they did long for night to come! They wondered if mother felt as uncom- iortaihle as they did. Mother did. Alter a while she called the lawns from the thicket where they were hidden. Without R word more she turned and led the way off among the trees. She moved slowly, It was too hot to move fast. The twins panted after her. Where could she be; going? It had seemed too not to lie still. but now it seemed much. much too hot to be moving. Nd: ii leait suirred You see there was no air stirring in there among the trees. At long last, which really wasn't very long at oil but merely seemed so, they saw ii silvery gleam ahead of them. They lifted their pretty little heads. and their delicate lit- tle noses ameliled water. In I. few minutes they came out of the woods to the shore of Paddy the Bea- ver's pond. Mother waded right into the water She waded out. un- til the water was over her back. Right there the pond was quite deep. The lawns. having learned to do whatever they saw mother do. did the same thing. 01' course they couldn't wade out as jar as mother could. but they did wade out until the water was almost over their backs, How good it felt. Mother turned. and waded iuhore. There she shook herself, The twins did the same thiniz. Thev filled the air with spray as thev shook them- selves. Mother led the way along the shore to where water-iillies were growing a little way out in the wat- er. She waded cut and Dulllltd loose several of the pads, as the lllv leaves are called. Slie tossed a couple over to the twins. The lar- ter were big enough now to eat green food, and those lily-pads tasted good. There were other wai- er weeds there that the little Deer found good to eat. After awhile mother did ii fun- fny iliiniz. She laid down in the ivaier.
