Rosr. Rep. —_ THE SHAWS. The Shaws are descended from Shaw Beg Mackintosh, the hero of the disgusting fight of the North Inch of Perth. He was probably a son of Ferchar, chief of the Mackintoshes. He was succeeded by his |e James. James had two sons, Alexan- der and Adam. He was killed at the battle of Harlaw in 1411. Alexander, Alasdir Ciar, obtained a heritable right to Rothi- murchus in 1464. He married a daughter sf Stewart of Kincardine, by whom he had John, his successor, Alexander, James, Ferchar and iver. John was succeeded by his son Allan. Allan sold Rothimurchus in 1539. He was succeeded in the chief- tainship of the Shaws by his son James, James had a son named Allan, who died without issue. He had also apparently another son named Alexander. The Shaws called themselves Mackin- toshes at least during the time that they owned Rothimurchus. They may or may not have been the clan Chevill of Wyn- town, Major, and other writers, Adam, second son of James, son of Shaw Beg, had a son named Robert, whe had two sons, Angus and Bean. Angus be- came proprietor of Tordarroch. He died without issue, and was succeeded by his brother Bean. Bean was succeeded by his son Ay or Hugh, who was succeeded by his son Robert. He died in 1896. His estates went to Ca:herine, his only child. Anne Fa quharson was married to Angus Mackintosh, chief of the Mackintoshes. She was married in 1741. She was then in her eighteenth year, She was the ceiebrated Lady Mackintosh of 1745. She died in Ediuburgh, March 2ad, 1784. Tux Inverey Brancu. James, fourth son of Donald Farquharson, of Castleton, was the first of the family of Inverey. He had five sons, William, John, Lewis of Archindryne, James of Tullochooy, and Donald. He was succeeded in Inverey by his eldest son, William. Lewis of Achindryne married Margaret, daughter of Farquharson of Allanquoich, by whom he had Alexander, John, William, Donald, @harles, and James, John and Charles were priests. The former had a valuable manuscript collection of Gwe ic poetry. He deposited it in« the Roman Catholic College at Douay in 1772. It was unfortunately destroyed. William, second of Inverey, had two sons, John, his successor, and Charles of Balmoral. John, known as the Black Colonel, com- manded the Farqubarsons at the battle of Killiecrankie in 1659. He had three sons, Peter his successor, Charles of Ach!osson, and James, Hedied about 1700 Peter com- manded the Farquharsons at the battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715. He was succeeded by his son Finlay, who died without issue. Who the present chief of the Fa: quharsons is 1 do not know. The chief of the clann Fhearchair, or descendants of Fhearchair Beag, that is, of all the Farquharsons, is to be looked for among the Fa: quharsons of Athole But as the Farquharsons of Athole were not land-owners they may not be able to trace themselves back, link by link, to their pro. genitor. ‘The chief of the clann Fhionniaidh, MacKinl:ys, Fmlaysons, or descendants of Fionnla Mor, is to be looked for among the Farguharsons of Braemar. John of Craig- niety, 4th son of Fionnla Mor, succeeded his father in the chiefship of the Finlaysons;. but John’s legitimate descendant’s in the male line may or may not be extinct. Finzean is said to be the chief of the Faigu- harsons, but one would like to see the proof. HENRY B. I suspecs that KIRILL. fai ni —<————— “Oreed and Form.” Sir,—I notice in the Guardian of the 30:h that the new pastor of St. James’ | church, in this city, is reported to have ssid last Sunday worning, concerning the late Bishop Phillips Brooks, that ‘** he did more, perhaps, than any other living mem ber of the Episcopate on this side of the Atlantic towards hastening the time when we shall rise above creed and form,” ete. What does the reverend gentleman mean by rising above creed and form? I have +lways understood creed tc mean faith, and how, therefore, can Christianity exist with- out creed? A creedless or formless Chris- tianity is no Christianity. With some the form may indeed exist without the power, but the power cannot exist without the form. I can easily understand people rising above the Presbyterian creed (che West- minster Confession); most Presbyterians have done so already, and it is to be hoped their ministers will soon rise above retain- ing and subscribing to the mere form; but | cannot understand anyone rising above the creed of the Episcopal Church (the Ap stiles’ Creed) without rising above, or rather sink- ing beneath Christianity. TRUTH. eon ere A Piucxy Lap.—The Halifax Chron- icle says : Musquodoboit has « plucky lad im the person ot Raymond Archibald, aged Ll years, son of Mr. P. G. Archibald. He went to the barn the other morning before daylight to feed cattle. While getting down from the scaffold he lost his balance and fell, upsetting the lantern. The flames from the lantern set fire to the hay and straw on the floor- The lad, however, showed great presence of mind by throwing the lantern out of the barn and then thr >w- ing himself on top of the burning straw, and by the free use of his cap managed to put out the flames. He then ran out of doors and put out the flimes of the lantern, at the same time shouting “fire.” When help arrived there were still sparks among the straw. The plucky lad thus prevented a conflagration and gave an exhibition of the explosion and it is still burning. About 150 men were in the mine at the time. The bodies of nineteen men killed by the shock were taken from the shaft The work of rescue was then suspended, as the smoke was so dense that the rescue party were unable to remain below.
