Prof. C. J. MaclVlilian's lecture last night on Thackeray needs no gilding by any neu's~ paper writer. 'l`he attendance, for Zion Church lecture room was packed and many were unable to gain admittance, was the best possible tribute of the regard entertained for Mr. MacMillan bath as a man and as a scholar. The very marked attention of the audience conveyed the best proof of their appreci- ation of the lecture. It was a master piece of literary discrimination, clothed in cholcest language and delivered in a terse, vigorous but unassuming manner. Tiiaekeray, iils birth and early life, the surroundings by which he was hampered, his niany repulses on the road to literary recognition and eventually his stirring up ofa vast reading public by his denun- ciation of snobbishness, money getting and society seeking, all these were thrown upon the mental screen and analyzed with masterly precision. The lecture was prefaced ¢witha solo capitaliy rendered by Rev. Mr. Sedge- wick whose strong cultured voice was in splendid form. Following the lecture was a reading from Thackeray by Miss Ruby Rattray who has just re_i;urned from the Emerson College of Oratory and who was warmly re- ceived by the audience. She gave an artistic rendition of two of Thackeray's poems. Dr. Robertson followed with a lengthy and scholarly analysis of the Poot's works. The vote of thanks was moved by W. L. Cotton, seconded by Rev. W. H. Sedgewick mid supported by John Newson, all expressing themselves in neat speeches euiogistie of the lecture. F. J. Nash, President of the Literary So- ciety, made an ideal chairman. m"’V""\f"‘\f-°°*°°‘l.r°°Rr~§§ A litres Boiiis of Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil for 35 cents is what we have to offer you this season.
