" JULY 9. 1949 THE GUARDIAN. CHARLOTTETOWN \ Grxawers Advised- lieBeelle Menace Flea. beetle populations have been decreasing during the past iew days," report Messrs 11.0. Callback. Laboratory oi Plant Pathology and PM. Gannon, Entomological Lab- oratory, Charlottetown. There will be very few now until the second brood of adults appear about the first week in August. A small num- her of Colorado beetle larvae or red grubs has been seen on early planted potatoes during the past few days. ‘jKeep a close watch for them and apply- a DDT spray or dust before they become too large and cause serious damage." they advise. "Remember that insects arc much easier to control and less poison is required if the spray or dust is applied shortly alter they hatch. “Potato drills should be -well billed in order to provide a thick soil covering over the tubers all sea- son. Small. steep. pointed hills are conducive to losses through late blight tuber rot, sunburn. and frost. The steeply inclined sides oi the hills shed much oi the water dur- lng rainfall, and during dry wea- ther increase the evaporation by their slopes. The hills should be broad, moderately sloped. and the crown should be slightly concave. This type of hill absorbs much of the rain, is-less subject to moisture loss through evaporation, and pro- vides the maximum soil covering." P. E. I. Plastic lung For Polio Victims NEW YORK. Jill! I.—(AP)—A plastic lung, weighing only a pound. is ready to aid polio victims this year. Fitting over the chest, it will do their breathing while they lie abed, ride in wheelchairs, or taks exercises to strengthen muscles. They can wear it going to a hos- pital. Their arms are loft free. so they can read and feed themselves. It is cooler than the big ‘lib-pound iron lung, which encases tho whole body except the head. The lung is a clear plastic hood with rubber on all sides, and is curved to fit over the chest. 1t is held in place by suction and two thin straps fitting around the pa- tlent's back. A seven-loot hose con- nects the hood with a small ms- chine that does the breathing. The machine, weighing 45 pounds, lowers the air pressure within the hood. thus raising the patient’s diaphragm so air is drawn into hlu lungs, When the pressure in the hood is raised the cheat muscles collapse, expelling the air from the lungs. The machine is set for 1G to 28 breaths a minute. lt has separate There are six sizes of the plastic- A storage battery operates the llIIlQ About 100 of these ‘lightweight DONAGII SCHOOL Report for June: Grade X-Elalne Trainer.
