Breed Straight. Whether breeding draft or road horses, breed the best you can of the class you decide upon. Avoid violent crosses. Don't :magine that you can, as a general rule, succeed in breeding a cross bred animal with the size and weight of a draft horse and the speed and activity of a race horse, nor that by cross breeding you can. ordinarily, get a happy cambination of many of the good qualities of both. It nay be acknowledged that, occasionally, an in- dividual hurse will be fourid that is an excellent animal, a good genaral pur- pose horse, and sucha harse may have been the result of cross breeding. But such instances are rare. They are ex— ceptions to the rule. Such crosses usually result in a “weedy,” ill pro portioned animal, that is fit for neither the one purpose nor the other. Such individuals are, when used for breed— ing purposes detrimental te breeders. They are not of a fixed type. They are composed of say 50 per cent of eaca of two incongruous elements, and their progeny in the next generation will generally be dissappointing.—E. F. Richman, before Iowa Institute. Weaning Young Pigs. Aimest all pigs are more or less ; Stunted when it comes time to wean | them from the dam. The only remedy | to prevent this is to accustom the pigs early to eat a.little milk, which may be given to them when they are 3. weeks fold. This is a good thing for the sow | also, as the pigs wili not tug at her | teats so ravenously and_ will gradually begin to wean themselves. “If any are CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY SINGLE FARETO Christiar, Endeavor and Convention DETRIOT, MICH., ‘July Sth to 10th, 1899 A _PERSONALLY CONDUCTED PARTY to the above will also spend one day at each of the following places, yiz:— Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa Niagara Falls Write for pamphlet of rates showing that the entire trip of all districts can be made for an expenditure of less than $60.00 4.
