The Closing of the Lobster Fac- tories. — Srr,—The fishermen of this place have just heard that the Fisheries Department is about closing up the lobster factories of this Island, by instructing the Fishery In- spector, Mr, Hackett, and the Dominion cutters’ to prosecute all those who take lobsters less than 95 _ inches. Now, this is too bad. We thought all along that it was an understood matter that no such action would be taken this year, because we were led to believe that the Minister had been convi ced by the sirong memorial forwarded to bim by the repre- sentatives of the people, not only of this {sland but also of New Brvnswictk,-thac the present regulations were impracticable and of little benefit. But to our surprise we learn that, while the lobster fishermen of the southern sec- tion of this Island and of the coasts around Pictou have been allowed to reap a rich harvest without any restriction or inspec- tion, and are now ‘preparigg and are pre- pared to close their factories; we who, by the unfavorable nature of the weather, have been half idle all this season, are threatened with a total suspen- sion of the business by which we hoped to obtain food for ourselves and our families. Is this fair or just ? Is there any reason in ju } If the law required that these regulations should be imposed, why were they not carried out all the season { Qr is it because the Minister has never seen the memorial that was forwarded to his de- partment that we have the present action ? We understand that Senator Prowse was to look after this matter, and he had _ bet- ter let us know if he attended to his duty. We cannot think that any department of the public service, in the present age, would deliberately fly in the face of the ex- pressed opinion of the representatives of the people (who had just been elected) as this late action of the Fisheries Department had done, if the facts had been properly re- presented. We hope that this harsh and cruel regulation will not be imposed this season, that for this year,—for the few. days that remain of the fishing geason—the poor fishermen will be allowed the privilege of earning a few dollars. There is every appearanee of a short crop on this Is!and and without the money that the fisheries bring us, the people will suffer, and when the people have reason to complain, they resent it onthe Government. As a sup- porter of Sir John Macdonald, l see great loss of political support for the Dominion Government if this unjust and invidious action is taken against the people of the Norra SIDE OF THE ISLAND. — W.
