McMurrer 1 Rose avenue, son of Mr. and -Mrs, Hugh McMurrer, gave his life for his coun- try on July 18. according to the fol- lowing official telegram -that his mo- ther received at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon; ` Mrs. Delia McMurrer, 1 Rose av- enue, Haverhill, Mass. Private Mclilliillrrer, who was 20 years of age, Dec, 3. 1917, was born In this city and was educated in the St. James' grammar school. After he left school he was employed as a cutter- at Wlinchell's shoe factory un- til lun enlistment, July 2s,` 1917. Private Mcmiiri-er enlisted at the local recruiting office. 1-le was sent ,to Syracuse, N. Y., for his training. -.ind in October, 1917, he went over- seas in the Machine Gun company or the inn infantry. He had part- icipated in many hot engagements. according to the letters received from him by his family, but lie ob- served the censorshi, rules striotly and never once mentioned -the name of a battle 'in which he took part. -His last letter, recieved last Thurs- day, stated that lie was under heavy fire, but not once has he expressed anything other than delight in his work. His letters have been fre- quent and full of high courage. The last letter was written in June, but day of the month was not given. From the postmark it is known that the letter arrived in this coun- try on July 2, but the family did not receive it until Aug 1. It is cheerful and is filled wltll remembrallces and messages to the various members of his family. Besides his parents, Private Mc- Murrer leaves two sisters, Miss Es- ther Catherine and Miss Jennie Lou- ise McMurrer, the younger of the two sisters a 17.year-old girl became hysterical in her grief late yester- day afternoon, and ‘it became neces- sary to remove her to the Hale hos- pital, in ~~the city ambulance. Chauf- feur Jan1es,Holan took -her to the hospital, and it was‘ necessary to lhold her throughout the joumey.
