nesses for the defence were pro-
duced by Tlndal Atkinson, counselor
for Colonel Repington‘ and Mr.
Gwynne who were each fined' £100
and costs this morning for viola-
tion of the censorship. He did not ev-
en call the defendants to the stand.
He spoke, however, for nearly two
liours, laying- stress on the import-
ance ot' the cnso und declaring it was
ii patriotic duty ol’ the defendants to
disregard the cciisoi"s warning and
let the public know what was going
on, because for the first time in the
history oi' the war, a poi-tion of the

toii. In this connection Mr. Atkinson
produced many German papers pub-

that the Germans knew all about tho

'THE sole head of a family or any male over
righleen years old, mnv homestead n quarter

‘Saskatchewan or Alberta. Applicant musi ap--
pear in person at the Dominion Lands Agency
or Sub-Agency for the District. Entry by proxy
may he made at any Dominion Lands Agency
but not Sub-Agency on certain conditions.
Duties-Six months residence upon and cul-
tivation ofthe land in each of three years. A
homesieader may live within nine mile: of his
homestead on a farm ui at least B0 acres, on
curtain conditions. A habitable house is re-
quired except where residence is perinmied inthe
vicinity.
_ In certuin districts a hoinesteader in good sland-
ing may pre-err_ipl a quarter-section along side his
homestead: Price $3.00 per acre.
Duties Six muniha residence in each uf three
years alter earning homestead ualcm; also 50 acres

mcnt was created today by the gov-
ernment. with Sir James Lougheod as

Armstrong, who has been acting 
lirector ot' the military hospitals coni-
inissioii, will be the deputy niliiister
of the new d'epai'tnieiit.
This departure is the natural result
oi’-thc greatly increased work of deal-
ing with the returned soldiers. its
scope will embrace the military lios-
pitals conimissioii, the pensions
board, and all the agencies which are
designed to facilitate the return ci'
soldiers to liiics ot' civil cuiployiiient.
For the present land settlement
comes under the interior department,
which administer the Dominion lands
but possibly this branch may be
transferred to the new departiiieiit.

minister, having headed' the hospitals
commission since its establishment,

witout portifolio since 1911, and is
