MAY SOLVE CANCER RIDDLE WASHDIGTON, Dec. 22--Cheap synthetic manufactured from the hair s-weepings of barber shops of a drug which may give medical men a new tool for disease treatment and study of cancer was announced today by two George Washington University chemists. Dr. Vincent du Vigneaud, profes- sor of biochemistry, and Gall L. Miller said the drug, known as glutathlone, is still a mysterious substance, but that research in oth- er laboratories- indicated it is a powerful factor in the growth of animals. Glutathione first was made syn- thetically about 15 years ago, but its manufacture was so difficult that it cost about $6.000 a pound. By making it from shorn human hair, plus the sauce used to season chop suey, it can be produced at a fraction of the former cost, the chemists explained, and thus be- comc available for extensive re- search. The chemical is made up of three amino-acids — substances which combine to form protein-known as cinc. Cysteine. it was added. appar- enty carries sulphur to the body cells, and its absence causes vari- of arthritis. Glutamic acid is derived from the chop suey sauce, and gly- cine, also made synthetically, is used in treating muscular troubles. Scientists who examined the re- port. of the George Washington the stimulators oi’ cancerous growths in the body. DR. E. M. BEST TAKES Best, secretary of the National Council of the Y. M. C.
