The meeting opened with a few prillniiii- ary remarks by Lieut. S. W. MacDon- ald, who explained the object of the meeting. Mr. R. H. Campbell then ad- dressed the meeting and in a well con- structed, well-dellvered speech placed before them the necessity for more men and their duty to respond. He was followed by the local clergymeii, the Rev. Mr. Greenlees, Rev. Fr. (lroken and Rev. Mr. Jones who spoke along much the same lilies. intersper- sed among the speeches was an ex- cellent muclcal programme including several choruses. and solos by Misses Ruth Campbell, May Renton and Edi`th Refuse, and Mr. Thomas Rear- ton. D. MacPhee. of Burnt. Point, who left here on that day to join his regiment in Montreal. Mr. Maci’hee left the Island about nine years ago, and since then has been in pretty nearly every part of the Northern hall' of the con- tinent. When the wnr broke out he gave up ii lucrative position as first officer on one of the Pacific Coast Steamers. and Joined the battalion which was then being formed ut Van- couver. Iu February last he came to his home here on furlough expecting that hi.s regiiiieiit would sail in 21 few days. For some reason however, the orders were delayed and J. I). had time to renew old ncqiiiiiiitiiiices and form new ones. His very excellent qualities soon made liiui ii general favorite, ami il was with sincere re- gret that his friends gathered to wish him good-bye and God-spccd. At the station Mr. J. D. Stewart, after ex- plaining in ii few well clioscii words the facts of the occasion read an ad- dress, and on behalf' of the people of Georgetown presented Mr. l\iacPhec with a purse of twenty-five dollars. Tile latter re.:-iponrled' with a. few words expressive of his gratitude and regret at leaving his friends, and as the train was pulling out three ring- ing cheers were given that must have stiitted the Kaiser in his den.--Y.
