By the time of the Franco-Prussian war (1870), the home army had to equal the field army. By 1918, every man at the front had to be backed up by five men at home. Today, so complex and so completely mechanized is warfare that it is estimated it takes no less than l8 men to maintain one soldier at the firing line. Backed by 18 men, the soldier at the firing line today is by all odds the most formidable defender who ever bore arms. Even his World War predecessor was defensless by comparison. The modern soldier fires a rifle three times as fast as the last-war soldier. He can travel, completely equipped 10 times as far in a day. His tank is a fort- ress. And in a plane, his long-distance bomb-carrying capacity is 32 times what it was in 1918. The effectiveness of the soldier today is in mod- ern military machines. Without them, he is hopelessly handicapped. The real contest today, therefore, is not on the firing line but on the factory production line where defense equipment is built. That is where wars today are won or lost. The great army of men behind the army at the front today includes steelmakers, shipbuilders, metal workers, farmers, parts assemblers, inspectors, and 11, long list of others.
