OUR WINTER ROADS. _i1 We complain much of the dilllculties and interruptions of the winter service between the Island and the mainland, and yet of the hundred thousand persons residing in the Province probably not one thousand have occasion to cross the Straits in the winter season. Ot course there are many thousands who feel the interruption ci the mail .service and others who do_not trawl beyond.tho»-Pro _ vlncial boundaries who -P5 Qgnnnve- nienoed by`the delays Q transpor- tation. When one comes traffic on our snow roads in the winter season. The trams between the farms and the market, between country and town or village, the periodical- trips of the mail-driver, the hauling of wood, rails and mussel mud, the visits of the minister and the d'octoi<,_ fraternal visits of societiss_` to each other, the going to church oh! thousands on succeeding Sfblaths, the ,_ D 88016. -ill these and many more incidents of daily life require the _use of the winter road and demand that it shall be kept in passable condition. `_. - ‘Y We are awake to the importance of having the roads kept smooth as may he during the spring, summer and fail - months, and at much cost of money and uber we mule them me shape, nu up' the ruts, repair the culverts and bridges in order that all who drive may have easy and comfortable passage, and that heavy loads may be transported with the least expenditure of horse-power. This sound economy and we all feel that the return justides the outlay. So mudh' care we take to keep the roads in repair during eight months of the year, only greatly neglect the same roads during the three or four winter months when the _ demands ot tratiic are almost i great. In tact, the _ neglect ot _our winter roads aiords a distinguishing feature of our insular unwisdnm. Much of the time year after year our snow roads are ’n~a condition that it not quite impassable is yet f-r from what it ought to be. _ Few it any ot our road districts are in U prssession of a snow-plough, _whi¢h_ in other Provinces is made to do exgglenb service. Storm succeeds storm and there is sometime_s a succession of drifting days. But, a'ter___ all the heavy snawstorms rarily number. more than three or four in the winter, with lighter falls between. Sometimes the winter road will remain good of itself for weeks. We can ill afford ever to have tion for any considerable length of time, and our country readers would consult their own best interest and convenience by bestowing a great deal more attention to their highways in winter than they have hitherto generally given.
