Seal Hunting Had Thrills - While II Lcisted Off Rusfico Reports of seals being seen off short around the Rustico- Cavendish areas fired the seal hunting zeal of two Newfound- landers and a P.E. Islander a few days ago and so they set off at day break on Monday from Borden to try their luck_ The p rty comprised Captain Gidean ane, Captain J._ S. Carter, and Captain Herbert MacKenzie. Captains Kane. and Carter are Newfoundlanders and both had considerable experience in the seal fisheries off the coast of Newfoundland. Captain Carter sailed on seal- ing ships for forty nine years and during that time nine of his ships were crushed by the heavy ice. He has been visiting his ,son-in-law Captain Kane. Captain Kane and Captain Mac- Kenzie are both employed on the M.V_ Abegweit. ON THE ICE When they arrived on the short slightly east of Cavendish Captain Kane and his Father- in-Law Captain Carter took to the ice like ducks take to water and got out about two miles Here's II Printing Offer of Interest ToIEvery Firm In P. When the two ‘Newfoundlanders were out the two miles suddenly a dense -fog came up and they were completely lost to the sight of Captain MacKenzie_ They did not have a compass but with the true Newfoundlanders ‘nose for the wind’ they worked their Way back to shore safe and sound with five seals. In the meantime Captain Mac- Kenzie worked his way back from the easterly direction hop- ing to be able to signal in some way to his friends out in the fog. Sii-ddenly he heard through the fog the familiar ‘voice of ‘ Captain Kane calling out to his Father-in-Law “Boy, ‘we sure will have.a grand feed of seal flipper to-night” and then the two emerged dragging their Major loss In Red Cross Break Is Individuals’ Interviewed last evening Miss lph-igenie Arsenault, Provincial Red Cross Commissioner, stated that just $80.00 of the funds missing as the result of the rob- week-end were returns from the current Red Cross Cam- paign_ This amount had been received after the last banking was deposited on Friday after- noon. “Campaign funds are de- posited daily at this time of the year”, Miss Arsenault said. The $3,500 reported as missing early this week was co sed mostly of personal bonds belong- ing to staff members who have since learned that these ca-n be replaced by Security Houses. It was further stated that re- ceipt books and correspondence have been checked through since Monday, and that those who have recently sent in money or- ders and cheques are being writ- ten and asked to take their re- ceipts to local Post O-ffices and have duplicate orders issued. This should help considerably in making the loss a good bit less_ than was at first surmised. seals_ By this time it was about 11 o’clock and they decided to return via Charlottetown and show Graham ‘Rogers their seals. ‘- CAR STUCK , On the way in from ‘near Cavendish the car got stuck in a mud hole and stopped and the witty old Captain Carter with real Newfoundland humor told his son-in-law “By gar boy you’ve lost your propeller sure”. Eventually they. all got back to Borden and had grand feeds of seal flippers, seal livers, and seal roasts V —>The next day two other New- foundlanders from Borden, P.’ ‘White and H, Cambden tried their luck and got eight seals. The Seasmograph crew who are doing work for Imperial Oil in the western part of P.E.I. dis- covered a live seal on short and brought it in to Summerside where it created a great deal of interest. Later the crew re- leased it on the ice_ BALTIC W. I. On Tuesday evening March .4, 1958, B-altic W.I. met at the home of Mrs. Gordon Cousins.
