I; firures up in the number of heat units contained in the different classes oi futl just named. Illuminating ga=, frr instance does not contain more than 600 heat units per cubic foot, refined oil ordinarily sold for lighting purposes con- tains 20,000 heat; units per pound and anthracite coal 15.000 neat units per pound Heat can bemeasured quite as accurately asany other mensutable quantity. But, uf course, in any comparison between coal, oil and gas used for fuel purposes ac- ioount should be taken of the fact that much of the heat from coal consumed in a stove, grate cr furnace escapes by the chimney and is lost, while oil or gas as ordinarily burned gives forth ali its heat in the house or room where it is con- sumed. There are other factors in the problem. Coal requires much more labor in lightinir, carrying and in the removal ot ashes, while there is much waste where a tireis . required only for a short' time, as in cooking, the fire being left to burn itself out when no longer needed. Coal and gas can ,be instantly lighted andas instantly extinguished, and require much less at- tention and labor. After due considera- tion of these points, the Record proceeds to a comparison of the values in heat units ;E>TiT<§d`by”one cent expended in coal, oil and gas respectively. Any one with half a grain of sense knows what is wanted without all these delays and special inquiries, Passengers want to make reasonably close connections with the boats. The mails need- to be despatched and received promptly. To eiect this a special mail and passehger train must connect Charlottetown with the steamer that carries the mail. Ten years of inquiry will not add to the pres- ent information, or to that which every N5! has known for years in regard to this, ` t The Government did well to assist Marconi in establishing his _station in Cape Breton. The experimental stage is passed and we now have a Marconii Company seeking incorporation in Canada to do commercial business in this country. At this stage it becomes the duty of the Government and Parliament to carefully guard the public interest. No doubt the capitalists ‘who are applying for incorpor- ation will want all they can get.
