Following is the Patriot’s report: -‘Mr. John G. Scrimgeour in the course of a brief speech pointed out that the Liberals are carrying out their pledges step by step, and that Canada under Liberal rule has reached an envi- _ able position among the nations of the We must express our astonishment that the Kings County Liberal~ have so little self respect, and so little re ~ gard for the welfare of their party as to put forward this man as their spokesman. They ought to know that they will be judged by the standard they thus set for themselves.“Birds of afcather flock together,”but surely the _ Liberals of Kings are not willing to *mm as hm' be known as men of the Scrimgeour_ type. And yet, if not, why was this ‘I man put forward to speak for them 'I Mr. Scrimgeour says the Liberal party are carrying out their pledges. It _is thought by the managers of the Government organ to be worth re- cording that Mr. Scrimgeour has said this. There are many fwho will not think the fact reflects much lustre upon the Liberal party. Reushaw of the illinois Central Says New Locomotives Would Bc Needed to Use Coke as Fuel. » Chicago Aug. 23.-“If the lllionis Central railroad had to prevent the smoking ol its locomotives by the use of coke to please the people who live on the South Side along its route the road would have to go tothe expense of buy- ing an entirely new style Ol locomotives." This was the reasrn given by Superin- tendent William Renshaw of the Illinois Central. railway’s machinery depart- ment lor the relusal of the' road to adopt the coke fuel system, which isto be employed for the prevention of smoke in the suburbs by the Boston and Maine railway. Coke already has been used in Bos- ton with success for locomotive fuel, and the total abolition of the smoke nuisance in the suburbs oi that city is promised by the promoters ot coke iuel. A simple substitution of the ord`insry_ grate for a water-tube grate is claimed to be the only change necessary to adapt any ordinary locomotive for using Superintendent Renshaw is of the be- lief that the undertaking oi the Boston and Maine road is not practicable. "From a mechanical standpoint, I don’t think the water-tube gzates will be effective,” said he said. “While coke may prevent smoke it would create a. line dust, which might be objection- able. I don’t think there is any hope ot getting smokeless .locomotives for the Illinois Central.” The day before complaint was made of the smoking Illinois Central engines letter from P. T. Barry complaining oi the smoke from the engines used on the Rock Island suburban trains. ` Mr. the -‘ publication in The Tiibune ot the protests against smoke the Illinois' Central engines was iollowed by an im- mediate and marked improvemeatoii the Rocky Island road. . c ‘ ' ' One of the otiicers of the Amalgamated ,,'u,' Pum,l'°"° “'°'m"'h° °°°`im"“u"‘ ““° _ _ _ #0 ’ ' Iron, Stell and Tin-workers’ Associaf Y 6 “elim Hood' slmpumf' tion said last. week that of the 50 000 7 K ‘ ' I members of the association not ,on e S ` ~ ; ES per cent of them are out of work. _ ---------------- -- ~-~» ` The aver e wa es 'd to h V uueiiss’ coucii uixruiis 2.98 ag ` g PM B em “B ‘ t " FAREs` 3 per day, and the leaders of th 0 \*\\f\‘\¢\ 5° ascii .i ‘ 0 p°mw‘§g:F;’l}d’ ilclildiirrlgei intzldldlitioiiihg thlhostgndlmts 1 l 'Q 'I " .. oh ttf) ll ,-\ L x rf, Q ;`\/ F" Il I 5% Q;-'_§y»/-` 1 _ _ f _ t. , ,<'¢~ wf s, ,S Spring Trade T50 time has some when ' ii should 1 k will wardrobe and se how yohoare fixed fd? sprlgg w In the event of you deciding to invest ina overcoat, etc., act promptly by ordering che WU Agents_»Geo.
