Yesterday, «t a quarter to three o’clock, the visiting prelates, clergy and a number of leading citizans were conveyed by special train to St. Dunstan’s College, where a grand banquet was given by His Lordship, Bishop Mclotyre. The banquet was held in the spacious hall of the College which was decorated for the occasion. On the western aside of the hall— the head of the festive board— was a beautiful white satin banner trimmed with goki, bearing the insignia of the Episcopacy, and the motto, *‘ Tot Anni; Tot Coron.” To the right and left of the banner were bannereties bearing the arms of their Lordships of Charlottetown and Chatham. Above, in semi-circular scroll. were the words ‘* Welcome,” ‘ Welcome, ’ while the whole was surmounted by a large ““XXV,” neatly worked in evergreens. The sides of the Hall were tastefully trimmed with evergreen, and flowers, and bore scrolls with dates of the interesting events in the lives of the Mgrs. McIntyre and Rogers, as well as the words ‘‘Health,” ‘‘Happi- ness’ and ‘*Prosperity.” In the centre of the eastern wa!l of the hall was a beautiful worked scroll, ‘Silver Jubilee.” To the right and left were portraits of Bishop Me- Intyre and Rogers, and in each corner were bannerr, (1)-having the inscriptions, ‘‘The Honor of the people,” (2) “God Bless their Pastorate.” The tables were magnificiently laid and cheerfully relieved with flowers, aud when the guests—a list of whom we lena = ~ : give below—tco their seats et three o'clock the festival hall presented an enlivened and beautiful appearanc’. — Alley, Judge. The menw was varied, extensive, and most excellent, reflecting great credit on Mr. Croker, of Halifax, who superintended the arrangements of the banquet. When it had been discussed to the satis- faction of all present, His Honor Lieutenant Governor Macdonald arose, and after con- gratulating their Lorhships Bishops Mc- Intyre and Rogers on attaining the 25th anniversary of their consecration, and paying a high tribute to the charac'er of Bishop McIntyre, proposed the health of their Lordships. It is needless to say it was enthusiastically honored. His Lordship Bishop McIntyre was re- ceived with prolonged applause. In re- sponding, he said he felt grateful for the cheerful and hearty manner in which they drank his health. When he looked around and saw eo many who have come thou- sands of miles to assist at the celebra- tion, he felt most grateful. Some of these were his professors, some his schoolmates, some his companions, but all his friends. He could not find worda to express his gratitude to all. There are, he said, certain times that one becomes embar- rassed and unable to find words to express his ideas. This, with him, was such an occasion. Words failed him to express thg deep sense of gratitude he felt for the honor bestowed on him by the visiting prelates and pe:ple. With reference to the works he had performed during his term of the episcopacy he said he could only ssy that had he not the co-operation of the people who dearly loved the Church he would not have been so successful. The people have gencrously co-operated with him, and when he looked back and saw how heartil and generously they responded to his rd quests, he could not wonder at the work performed. His Lordship concluded by thanking them heartily ‘for the toast to his —— health, and wishing them health, happiness and prosperity, His hordship Bishop Rogers returned thanks for the toast, and expressed his}. heartfelt thanks to His Lordship Bishop McIntyre for his kindness in permitting him to take part in this grand celebration. He referred to the many visits he made _ to Prince Edward Island since he was con secrated Bishop. These visits, he said, were most beneficial to him, andhe always returned home with renewed energy to continue the work of his diocese. The im- provements made in Chatham were, he said, in a great measure owing to ihe kind advice of His Lordship the Bishop of Charlottetown, whose ex- ample in every respect he (Bishop Rogers) always endeavored to emulate. After re- ferring to Bishop MclIntyre’s successful administration, the growth of St. Dunstan's College, and expressing his delight at seeing 80 many distinguished prelates present, he concluded by proposing the health of ‘‘Our Guests.” Hon. W. W. Sullivan responded in a brief speech, After referring to the many noble works of His Lordship, and to the honor conferred by the visit of so many distinguished prelates, he said he would be delighted to see them not every twenty- five years, for that was a long period of time, but every vear, in the summer season, We had, he eaid. as fertile and beautiful a country as in any part of the Dominion. He closed by hoping that their Lordships would enjoy bealth and happiness and live long enough to celebrate their Golden Jubilee. His Graco Archbishop Tachereau 8; ok in French. He said, as a representative of the Mother Church of Canada, he had great pleasure in being present at the cele- bration. At one time Quebec extended her sway, not only up and down the St. Lawrence, but also away down the Miss- issippi, and now, when Bishoprics have sprung up all around, he came as it were from the Mother to hail the success of a worthy daughter of the Mother Church. He tendered his hearty congratulations to their Lordships Bishop McIntyre and Rug- ers, and wished them health and pros- perity. His Grace Archbishop Lynch, after o few good humored and witty remarks, spoke of the beauty and fertility of the Island. Don’t ask for emigration, he said, keep all your lands for your posterity. Then your institutions will be your own; you will, as at present, have your own Governor born on the Island, and your own Bishop. His Grace said he was going away with a splendid opinion of the Island, He often heard of it, but never thought it was so boautiful. You, have, he said, a spk ndid country, and a most hospitable people. <A gentie- man at one time was describing Uleaven. He was from Kentucky, and after exhaust- ing his descriptive powers, he concluded by saying it was a ‘* Kentucky of a Heaven.” Prince Edward Island was as much like Ireland, His Grace said, as any part of the world he ever saw, and he would therefore centent himself with calling it an ‘‘irelend of an Island.” His Grace the Archbishop of Halifax rejoiced to see the eslebration so success- ful, and expro’sed his happiness at seeing the hearty manner in which the clergy and laity joined to do honor to His Lordship. His Lordship Bishop Power, of St. John’s, Newfoundland, after a few good-’ natured remarks, in which he expressed his desire to see the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland confederated, expressed his happiness at being present at the celebra- tion, and congratulated their Lordships on attaining the 25th anniversary of the Epis- copate. His Lordship then referzed to the beauty and verdure of the Island, compar- ing it with [reland, and concluded by hoping he would live and enjoy heaith to attend the Golden Jubilee of their Lord. ships, twenty-five years hence. The dinner was concluded at 7 o'clock, and the guests of His Lordship returned to the city at 7.30 o'clock by special train. THE TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION, The members of the Benevolent Irish Society and the young men of the Catholic Literary Union met at 7 o'clock, in St. Patrick’s Hall, in regalia, and headed by the City Cornet Band, marched in proces- sion to Hillsborough Square, where they were joined by the members of St. Dun- stan’s congregation, headed by the Band cf the 82nd Battalion. The procession started from Hillsborough Square at 8 o’clock, and marched up Hillsborough street to Kent street, down Kent street to Pownal street, down Pownal street to Water street, up Water street to Queen street, up Queen streot to Richmond street, down Richmond street to Weymouth street, down Wey- mouth street to Water street, up Water street to Great George street, to the Bishop’s Palace. On arrival of the procession at the palace the gcene was one of unrivalled brilliancy. The Episcopal residence and the Cathederal were illuminated. {The Papal Standard floated above the cap, and on its every available point, dormar win- dows, and roof of tho palace were flags of various nations. Surrounding the centre of the palace were a string of picturesque Chinese lanterns, while colored lights hung from the corners of the edifice to the ground. A grand display of fireworks was in progress, and as the procession drew up and halted in front of the Episcopal resid- ence, and the venerable Bishop and visiting prelates tame forward to greet them, the scene beggared description. The members of the Irish Society and Literary Union massed themselves at the foot of the great front stairway that graces the general entrance. Thousands of per- sons crowded che streets outside the rail- ings. The processionists having grounded their torches, Bishop McIntyre addressed them, expressing in his happy manner the deep feeling of gratitude which he felt <or all they had done in making the day’s cele- bration such a complete success. Le was thankful fur the honor they had done him, and, through him, the religion they all loved so well. Bishop McIntyre was fol- lowed by the Lord Bishop of Ottawa, the Bishop of Montreal, the Bishop of St. John and Archbishop O’Brien, who praised the enterprise and generosity of the people, and assured them that the efforts they put forth in preparing and carrying out so splendid a demonstration, were more than creditabie to the Catholics of P. E. Island. THY EXUURSION. At 10 o’clock this morning the visiting prelates and clergy, accompanied by His Lordship and a large number of our Island priests and several gentlemen of the con- gregation er joyed a boautiful exoursion up the Hillsborough and West Rivers, and out the harbor as far as the Bell Buoy off Point Prim. Tho weather was most favorable, and the strangers were lavish in their praises of the beauties of our Island. At 1.30 p i. the Heather Belle returned to Charlottetown when all repaired to the Palace for luncheon. HIS LORDSHIP’S PRESENTS. His Lordship was the recipient of many beautiful and costly presents, among which was asilver missle-stand, presented by the Society of the Holy Family, and a silver chaplet and engraved case from that of St, Joseph’s, were very much admired. A beantiful present was also the silver urn of the Mother General of the Congregation de Notre Dame.
