Then, emerging from his retirement. the happy ostrich congratulated himself sounding name of a simple drink from strawberry juice, lemons, and water skillfully mingled. Claret punch is another drink in which the strawberry plays a prominent part. Here are the directions for making it:— ‘*Put in a good-sized bowl the juice of three lemons, two oranges, sliced and seeded, one slice of pineapple, shredded, half a pint of strawberries, and one cup of granulated sugar. Let them stand an hour to extract the juice, then press and strain. Add to the strained juice one quart claret, one quart iced wat:r, one slice pineapple, shredded, half a pint fine strawberries and one banana, sliced, and serve. ’’ sugar Straw Bail. The origin of the familiar phrases, “straw bail’’ and ‘‘a man of straw,’’ is a most curious one. It dates back two thousand years when the practice of en- tering worthless bail was common. The exact methods, however, have not been transmitted to posterity, but in several old English works is to be found refer- ence to them. In one of these—Fielding’s “Life of Jonathan Wild,’’ the thief- catcher—we read that Jonathan's aunt married a man ‘‘who was famons for so friendly a disposition that he was bail for above a hundred persons in one year. He had also the remarkable honor of walk- ing in Westminster Hall with a straw in his shoe.”’ It seems that et one time when English lawyers wished to procure witnesses with elastic conscience, or men who would go hail for their clients, they went into Westminster Hall, into which the prin- cipal courts of law opened, and there would guickly recognize the men they wanted by glancing at their shoes, from which protruded a straw or two, thus indicating their calling. Because of this trade mark, so to speak, these profes- sional witneses or bail-goers became known as ‘‘men of straw’’ or ones who were williing for a consideration to enter “straw bail.’’ Baby has a few rights outside of the care and protection of parents that are not always observed. Baby does not like a stranger to rush at or squeeze him or talk incompiehensible nonsense to him. If allowed to sit still on his moth- ite its er’s or nurse’s lap, he will make up his small mind about the visitor and make his own advances in due time. Babies must be wooed, not taken by storm, and it is one of their rights to be allowed to stndy those who approach them and give their confidence by degrees. Handsome Featur>s.
