Prime Minister F. C. Alderdice has let it be known the administra tion is considering a proposal to swap 100.000 tons of iron for coal of the same value. Although details have not been disclosed, it is under- stood the scheme will be similar to me pitprop deal which was put through so successfully last summer. Under that contract, entered into on December 1, 1932, between the Newfoundland Board of Railway Commissioners and ~ Gueret, Llew- ellyri and Merrett, about 90,000 tons nf pit-props were exchanged for 48,- 000 tons of coal from the Welsh i-ompany's mines. All summer long ateamers moved back and forth a- cross the Atlantic, carrying coal one way and pltprops the other. By sub-letting contracts for pit- props the railway commissioners not only secured their coal at a lower rate than they had been paying but gave work to large crews of woods-‘ men al1_ last winter-and kept the money in the country. The same Welsh company also en- tered into another contract to ex- change 7,500 'tons of coal for 25,000 tons of iron ore from Bell Island.; rind the contract was completed this` month. if similar contracts can be made| for larger orders of lion in the Unl- ted_Kingdom, the Bell Island m.in- srs will be assisted in a time of need. Anticipating success with the prime minister has said prospects for activity at Bell Island mines next year are exceedingly bright. Besides the possibility of barter, he looks for large direct orders from Germany.
