UPEI Gets To Debating Quarter-Finals Over the October 26-28. weekend, the UPEI Debating Society sent two teams to compete at the Atlantic Regional Debating Championships at the University of New Brunswick. Both teams reached the quarter finals, and one of them came within one point of reaching the semi-finals. UPEI placed 6th and 7th in the overall standings, with 20 teams in the competition. Atlantic region placed teams higher in the standings than UPEI, with teams from as far away as Memorial University in Newfoundland in attendance. The debaters to be congratulated are Michelle MacDonald and Steve Murray (UPEI B), and Edward Lank and Michael Woodman(UPEI A). UPEI’s impressive performance at the Atlantic Championships certainly establishes us as having one of the strongest debating squads in the region for this year. The debating Society credits several years of membership expansion and improvements in training as resulting in the strength of this year’s teams. UPEI’s next tournament will probably be the McGill Invitationals in Montreal in February of next year. By all indications so far this season, UPEI should continue to place teams high in the standings in national competition. Debating Society The Debating Society met on October 31st to discuss upcoming debates and to practice public speaking skills. Public Speaking is when a student is given a statement and is allowed ten seconds to come up with a topic to speak on for five minutes. Edward Lank did na excellent speech on how a person can reach his/her goals by trying different paths and finding new ways to reach the goals. He tied this into the statement "If you can’t find the key to success, pick the lock." Sharlene Small used the statement "you better bail out when the curtain comes down," when she spoke about her experiences with acting and the theatre. She informed us of ways she had wished she acted when her curtain came down. It was an interesting, informative, and fun meeting for everyone who attended. For any Only three universities in the . students interested in Public speaking, this is a great way to learn how and to improve yourself. 3 This holiday season Give a child a future By sending UNICEF cards. unicef &@ For a new full-colour brochure, contact: UNICEF Canada, 443 Mount Pleasant Rd.
