C. F. socialist party now claims to be a national party and is mak- ing every effort to establish~itself in; every province in Canada. For this rea- son, it is important that freedom-loving people in every part of Canada take care- fufnote of the actions, utterances and policies of the C. C. F. in those areas in which it has established itself. The name of the British Columbia socialist leader who would in the natural ord.er of events become Premier o! the Province if the C. C. F‘. party were returned to power. is a. man by the name of Harold Winch. It i is surely not, unfair to judge y what __tl1e_ actions of a. C. C. F. government would be from the statements made by this social- ist leader, statements which apparently are approved by other leaders of the C. C. F. socialist party. We quote Mr. Winch as follows: ln the Vancouver Sun, Jan.15, 1940: “No C. C. F. Government can rest until it abolishes capitalism. On-any other basis, the C. C. F. will pass out of existence.” I At the 10th Annual C. C. F. Convention, April, 194s; "We must make it quite clear that we are not a“ reform partybut we are a mili- tant and revolutionary party and intend to bc a militant and revolutionary gov- ernment.” ' SOClALlSlll l5 Mil 1 In a speech at Calgary on November 9, 1943: “Canadian troops now ' overseas would not lay down their arms when peace came, until they had obtained their aims at home. This war didn’t ‘start when the first shot was fired. It’s time we had a revolution . . . . “A change is coming, peacefully or not . . . . When we become t'he govern- ment, we will institute Socialism immed- iately, and will use the power of the police and the military to force tlnre‘ opposed to obey. Those who defy the government will be treated as criminals. 1f Capitalism says ‘No’ then we know the answer — so did Russia. “We're going to scrap the B. N. A. 'Act . . . .” “We will nationalize the financial system of t‘he Dominion . . . . There will be no unearned money paid in the form of interest.” On February 19, 1944, speaking in For» esters‘ Hall, Vancouver: “The C. C. F. is on the march. It is on‘ the march to power. To the opportun- lty to show democratically what can be’ done. Capital- They have‘ We know they will use ' o “We recognize it is a war. ism recognizes it ir- a war. called it that. I EVGYY WQBPOD. - e _|_ _- “I did not say one thing in Calgary that I and other C. C. F. people have no!‘ been saying for 11 years. / "But all of a sudden there is a sensa- tion —— and why? Because of what I said? No. but because all of a sudden . , ‘x / FREEDOM i they have realized the C. C. F. is a threat. They realize that it is a war now between the systems of capitalism and socialism. They realize the C. C. F. is not fooling. is not playing a game. That the c. c. F‘. is out to make war and to end the power, and control oi those who profit.” These statements of policy by Mr. Winch have not been repudiated by Mr. M. J. Coldwell, federal leader of the C. C. F. socialist party. On the contrary, I on January *5, 1944, speaking at the Hotel Vancouver, Mr. Coldwell allied himself with Mr. Winch when he stated that re- ports of a rift between himself and Harold Winch were “just so much wishful think- lng.” In the first quotation above, Mr. Winch re-iterates the policy of the Regina; Manifesto of 1,933, which remains the basic declared policy of the C. C. F. social- ist party. It envisages the abolition oi’ all private ownership it the C. C. F. were tble to form a Government in Canada; ,The Manifesto declares: “No C. C. F. Government will rest cofitent until it has eradicated capitalism and put into eitect the full program oi.‘ socialized planning . -.~ . .” Fortimately. tree‘ Canadians can still choose between a free system of society and a dictatorship of socialist “planners!” Canada has achieved one o! the rhighest‘ living-standards of any country in the world, and Canadians are free to improve their system and raise this standard higher by intelligent public action. Under a “militant and revolutionary” govern; ment, it would be a digierent story. hsllelbytlePu-iaeelcnlllslealnlbenlrarty.--
