Page 12, The Guardian Monday. June 30. 1958 "Down Under” Attracts Immigrants From U. K. By M. McIntyre Hood Special London (Eng.) Correspondent For The Guardian LONDON—Australia and New Zealand fire jumping in with both feet to take advantage of the dis- inclination of Canada to make any aggressive drive for immigration this year. Australia has announc- ed in London a new family m1- gration scheme intended to induce British families to migrate there. Under this plan, British Parenlls would be allowed to bring all their children under 19 years of age to Australia free of charge. Previously a charge of five pounds ($14.00 has been made for each child between the ages of 14 and 18, and only children under 14 have been carried free. Under the new plan, the Aus- tralian government would contin- ue to contribute 140 pounds, Aus- tralian, towards the passage cost of each adult, with the emigrant paying only 10 Lbs. ($28.00. The . British government is making a [contribution of 150,000 pounds to- lwa-rds the scheme. SINGLE GIRLS New Zealand is making a spe- cial bid to induce single British girls to migrate there. New Zea- land’s assistant minister of im- migration, Dr. Ma-zengard, Q.C., who arrived in London the other day, said: “'1lhe arrival of 20,000 girl im- migrants would be more accept- able to New Zealand just now than the import of 20,000 cars or a 20 million pound loan.” The reason - the number of bachelors in New Zealand is therefore prepared to take single women between‘ the ages of 18 and -45 under its irnmlgration scheme and give them free pass- age. Pra-wically all female occu- pations are included. Australia wants 12,000 single women, for the same reason as its sister Dominion in the anti- podes. In the case of Austnalia. adult women have to pay only 10 pounds for their passage. I.O.D.E.
