('i~~il\’:':i? muons ' .59.... all lesrsic .ollt|l-lei o A Feohm For Every Friday . i Dig Tarnenl According to word coming in from all parts of the Province. there was an exceptionally large turnout to the Federation meet- inge held Tuesday ‘ night. or course, there were some misun- derstandings about the procedure and in a few scattered cases the membe "5: forms and internu- tion were not received. However. most of these districts have ar- ranged for a further meeting where the rnembershi-p fonms will be completed, the district dele- gates appointed, and the ballots turned in to the secretary. Explanation We want to make it clear that this proposed Marketing Board vote is not a part of the Federa- tion. It is just a new method of marketing promoted by t the farm- ers to control prices and regulate marketing. This .was just an op- portunity iro take a vote at all the farmers on the Island who grow and sell potatoes or polli- try and eggs, whether they be young or old, in partnership with someone else. or whether they are Federation members or not. such farmers are entitled to vote in this question but. their ballots must be turned in to the Federa- ion secretary in that district and their name put on the district voters list before their ballot will be recognized. All those ballots must be returned by March 20th. As they are returned. in the of- ficial envelopes sent out for this purpose. they will be deposited in a ballot box and will be opened and counted on the 20th by a neutral independent committee. This committee has not been chosen as yci, but will be selected within the next few days and will represent the different groups in- terested in this question. We have no word as to what the response was regarding Day- light Saving Time. This will not be decided until the meetings of the County Federations in the Spring. . Potato Dealers At a very generous dinner meet.- ing called and attended by most of the large potato dealers in the province last Saturday. repre- sentatives from your Federation were asked to explain the reason for and the set-up of the pro- posed potato marketing boards This meeting was attended by the Minister and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and other Government officials. A free and open dis- cusion followed with many rea- sons being suggested why a potato marketing board could not be op- erated. There were a few signs of hostility about the thought of farmers uniting to have some say in the marketing of their own products. However, we feel that the majority of the coriecieniivus dealers, both in potatoes and poul- try products are agreed that something must be done. They agree on the need for some methodlto regulate the marketing of these products, eliminate many of the unethical and disorderly practices now existing in, the trade. . We have been informed that the potato dealers are new setting up a provincial organization of their own. We feel this is a step in the right. direction and long over- due. If such an organization is successful our farmers will then have an official group to deal with in working out some improved marketing arrangerneiits for the betterment of all concerned. Will Take Time if there is suflicient. returns from the farmers of the Province and the, vote is favourable, it will take some time to work out all the details of this marketing scheme for potatoes. This will have to be done in co-operation with representatives of the in- dustry in the other two Maritime Provinces. We are hopeful that this auangome t. can be worked out in time for the marketing of our 1950 crop. Steps to establish the egg and poultry board, if the vote is fa- vourable, will have to be taken in conjunction with the develop- ment in the other provinces right across Canada. Dairy Situation Prices of butter have been out again at least twice during the past couple of weeks. For no ap- parent reason the price for Island butter is down below the Support Board price. it has come to the point where New Brunswick Dairies are buy- ing up Island butter and swriru it so it will not undermine their prices. The present arrangement for a support price on butter will expire on July let. If there is not some order put into our own mar- keting practices at home, it is dif- ficult to see how we can again ask the Government for help in storing our surplus. The situation is serious. This is once! the big questions facing our farmers at thpir County Federation’ meat- lnga in the spring. seed, Meeting On Tuesday. representatives ‘of the Federation. Department. of Agriculture.
