A couple of years later a new boy ap- peared at the Miles home, and the see- retary thought the time propitious to repew the application. “Why, my dear sir.” said Mr. Huntington when he beard him through, “I raised your sal- ary when you asked me before.” “I never heard anything about It,” said the secretary in amazement. “Probably not,” returned Mr. Hunt- ington. “In fact, | used that money to buy a piece of property for you. I'd just let it stand for awhile if 1 were you.” Mr. Miles thanked him warmly and retired somewhat mystified. Shortly after Mr. Huntington called him into his private office. “By the way, Miles,” he said, “I have sold that real estate of yours at a pretty good advance. Here is the check.” The amount was $50,000. The prop- erty was part of a large section pur- chased by the railway king as an in- vestment for his wife—San Francisce Argonaut. Her Begging Scheme, A respectably dressed old woman ap parently in deep distress was noticed standing at the foot of the steps of an elevated railroad station the other day just at the hour when the rush was at its height. The woman had apparently lost something of value. She searched her pockets, shook out her skirts and course it was not long before her dis- tress attracted the notice of passersby. “T have lost my ticket,” she said in an- sewer to the query of a man who stop- ped for a moment in his rush for the train. “I don’t know what to do, for I have not a nickel with me and 1 live away up town.” The man pulled a string of tickets from his pocket, tore off one, handed it to the woman and resumed his rush without waiting for her thanks. But the woman did not follow. She mere- ly moved across to the flight of steps on the other side. Here she resumed her search, with the result that a nickel was transferred to her pocket by a passing woman. Next she crossed the avenue and gathered some more nick- els and tickets from the passengers go- ing in the opposite direction, finally returning to her original stand, where her plight attracted as much compas- sion as before. While the observer was looking on, the woman made two rounds of the stairs, each round occu- pying about ten minutes. It was a tousled and sleepy look- ing head that popped burriedly through the second story window. There was a frown on the face and an angry flush in the half closed eyes. “Who in thunder’s there?” was shouted by this forbidding looking presence, totally unmindful of nature's beauty at 5 in the morning. “Who's there, I say?” it repeated in louder and more threatening tones. There was no answer. “What do you mean coming around bere this time of night and ringing my bell like this? I never heard of such infernal impudence. Get out in the yard where I can see you and talk to I'l) be down there in about two minutes if you don’t tell me what you want.” “Anything the matter, dear?” yawa- ed the sleepy wife. “I should say there was. Didn’t you hear the bell? Rang for five minutes straight. Whoever it is must be either drunk or crazy. Where’s my revolver?” “Don’t you think for a minute of go- ing down there with a revolver. It would be terrible if you’d shoot some one. I'll go.” “Indeed you won't.” “Then we'll both go.” Just as they faced the window a curtain shot up at the next house, a dozen feet away, and the pretty young girl who was to take an early train ap- peared winding one of those round, nickel, loud ticking clocks. “Why,” she laughed, ‘did the alarm bell disturb you?” He crawled into bed saying intense things, and the more his wife shook in the effort to restrain ker mirth the wore he said, ea Dr. Chase Cures Piles | Without the Danger, Pain or Expense of an operation—The Cniy Cuaranteed Cure.
