Island 'ri-ie following la taken from the Sudbury Star, Sudbury. Ontario. and will be of interest to Island readers. Rev. Father Trainer referred to be- low is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tralnor. Kingston. and a. bro- ther ot Mr. P. C. Tralnor of this City. A product of St. Ann's. Prince Ed- ' ward Island, with parents of Irish birth. Rev. Father Thomas H. Tralnor has been indefatigable in the life oi’ the Roman Catholic Church not only as parish priest of St. Joseph's Church. Sudbury. but in every one of his stations and mis- sions which have. since his entry tn [North Country. and in all of which ‘he has accomplished some outstand- ‘ing act which serves as a living memorial to his labors. Taking charge of St. Joseph's. seven years ago next month, Rev. Pr. Trainer has brought thc strength of his congregation to 2.000 souls. During that time a new rectory has been built and a church basement ‘constructed on substantial and elab- orate lines. As a boy. Rev. I-"r. Trainer dis- played marked ability at learning. When only 14 years of age. he held a second class teacher's license, hav- ing qualified for entrance to Prince of Wales College. Charlottetown. P. E. 1., the year previously. Though mentally equipped, his age prevented his taking a school. and he contin- ued his college studies until 1893 when he began teaching. following this profession for three and a half years. Entering St. Dui-istan's Col- lege, he remained four years, and it is interesting to note the impression that the future priest made upon one of his lassmates. Rev. Fr. James Donahue, who in his work. "Priest ‘of Prince Edward Island," writes: "He put to best use his exceptional talents; ever energetic, he worked to the limit of his physical capacity. ‘His genial, sprightly manner at once ‘gathered friends about him, and ;though in his circle the fun became iboistrous. there never was any de- parture from a healthy display of exuberant spirits. Although he spent ‘less time over his books. he did not fall behind his classmates; his brightness and intcllcct enabled him to keep to the front. though he had not the record for burning more midnight oil." ~ Obtaining his degree of B. A., from Laval University. he proceeded to Sacred Heart Seminary. Halifax. N. 8., and thcre took first place in his classes. Adopted by Rt. Rev. D. l1. Scollard. D. D.. of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. he turned to his itheologlcal studies at. the Grand Seminary. Montreal. I-Ils ability ab‘ tractcd attention and he was OITCI“, ed a two years‘ course at Rome. but.‘ the bishop was in need of priests and he could not accept. At Bishop Scollards wish he mastered French and at his ordination spoke it fiu- ently. .As assistant to Rev. Fr. Chas. Langlois, of Sturgeon Falls, Rev. Fr. Trainor was first appointed after his elevation to the priesthood. Cache- Bay was then a mission. and. pay- ing monthly visits. Rev. Fr. Trainer inspired such progress that after three months the new priest found himself 1n charge of a newly formed parish. Appreciation of his labors there was voiced by Bishop Scollard ‘upon the opening of a. school which ,R.ev. Fr. Trainor was responsible for ‘establishing. During his stay. a par- llsh house was also erected. l ‘Approaching the Mother Superior lot the Sisters of st. Joseph at Peterboro four years ago, he suc- leccded in having four Sisters sent lto Sudbury as teachers in the sep- larate schools. Other Sisters have ;bcen~added and the community now inumbcrs fourteen. A conveniuwas lbullt for their accommodatlomwhlch Towing to growing demands, was last -ycar enlarged. ' Rev. Fr. Trainor is a natural ora- .tor. and as Rev. Fr. Donahue says, |"he presents any subject in a very interesting manner. I-Ie has entered thc lecture field and succeeded. I-Iis chief lectures are : "Robert Emmet." "Sir John Thompson." and “Cath- olic Education." Rev. Fr. Tralnor is a strong supporter of the Catholic ‘Order of Foresters and organized the court in Sturgeon Falls. l-Ie is Grand Knight of the Sudbury Council.
