Grand Chap- ter of the L.0.A and the L.O.B.A. as well as the Black Chapter. The last time the annual session was held here was in 1936 Just 18 years city. It is the 123rd annual gather- ing. The Orange Order was founded in the cathedral of Exeter in 1688 on the arrival from Holland of William, Prince of Orange, who was to become King and rule with his wife, the daughter of James II. as joint monarchs. The order bearing his name was founded by a group of influential men of Eng- land who banded together to pro- tect themselves and to aid in the defence of the Prince who had been invited to ta Dhe Throne on the overthrow ' bdication of the then King. also wished to perpetuate the Protestant relig- ion in their country and assure the continuance of the successi-n in their belief. It was just 107 years later that, the Order emerged in its present, form following the Battle of the Diamond at County Armagh, Northern Ireland. I Prince oi Orange The Prince of Orange was not an interlopei'. despite the fact there was s reigning King. James had fled to France to escape the temper of the people. roused after only three years of rule. William was a grandson of King Charles First and his wlfe,.Princess Mary of York, was I. daughter of the abdicating monarch. Charles I had been beheaded by the army commanded by Cromwell who led? a rebellion against what they con-I sidered the excesses of the Court own hands. On the Restoration Charles 11, became King and the country 11-; jolced at the ireedom of enter-' tainment under the new rule. He was succeeded in 1685 by James II. After the latter fled to France William was welcomed in Eng- land, but in Ireland James had a fertile propaganda field and in 1690 landed there with the support of the French. However, he was defeated at the Battle of the Boyne. The first meeting of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland was held at Portsdown in July of 1796. At that time the Grand Lodge in- cluded just the counties of Tyrone. Dublin, Londonderry and Fer- mangh. For several years there were two Orange bodies in exist.- ence. the Association and the In- stitution, but they were amalga- mated in 1375. I l Origin of Lodge The origin of Orange Lodges in Canada appears to be in some doubt. Unquestionably there were several groups of men, initiated in; the Old Country, who startedl holding meetings after their com- ing to Canada. It was approxi-, mately 1330 that Ogle Gowan came here and established the As- sociation. The Broups operating up to that time are believe" to have been headed by soldiers and sail- ors of British units which were stationed here in those days. The first Orange parade of which there is a record in thisf country was held July 12, 1322 in . Toronto with a newspaper repor-ti ' of that time stating that when it was over the 100 present repaired to a tavern for dinner. The con- f eluding remark was to the eifect ithst "the greatest harmony pre- vailed". The L.0.B.A., the womens, branch, came into being in 1888 ,although under a different name than now borne. It beizan in Hum- ilton, Ontario, and rapidly spread across the country. In this pro- vince Mrs. Mary MacLean was the first R. W. Grand Mistress. The present R.W.G.M. is Elizabeth: Best. Heading the L.O.A. as R. W. Grand Master at present is Chest- er E. Shaw. LAKEVIEVV W. I . May meeting of Lakeview W. I met at the home of Mrs. Lyman Rose, Lakeville.
