In our case the erection of a steam an increase in knowledge, of a demand for intellectual capital, for information without which all other capital is in It measure useless, 1 themselves at Orwell, had been anticipated, by for though gold and silver may abound in i the praisewortliy consideration of Mr. John greater quantities than Austr.-ilia and Califor- ' Ilouse, who had not only thrown open his re- trial has afforded, unless they are made subser- vient to and are under the control of knowledge and science the nation, state, or country is after all but a. glittering barbarisni. We are proud to bear testimony to the fact, that use- ul learning and knowledge is greatly on the increase, and we trust that but a very few years will be sufiercd to elapse before the inhabitants of this Island will be distinguishi- ‘for having their minds equally as cultivated as ,their soil, and we hope to be aiding and assist.- ?ing b means of our new powerful press, tower s a consummation so desirable. Having thus suacessfull ' accomplished the completion of our establia iment by the adop- ton of steam as a motive power. we shall he the better able to devote more of our time and attention (which has in some measure been di.- verted b the necessity ofat-tending to the crec.- tion of the engine) to the im rovement and oin- bellisliinentof our aper, an rendering it more attractive by _a se ection of the best literary food we can procure, both original and select . .We would at the same time remind our friends who may be in need of our services, that from our increased facilities we are able to execute all kinds of printing in the best manner and at the cheapest rates. We have already printed 5 works for publishers in New York, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and would be better able successfull to compete with the presses in those places, ad an enlightened Le islature remitted the duties on the materials, e trust however, that this exposure of the unequal manner in which we in common with those who have been striving to establish domestic manufactures have been treated, will compel the Government from a sense cfjustice. to put us on a level, at least, with foreign com etitors. We have from this cause been obliged a refuse many applications for ciiiployinent, but we trust that next year no such obstacles will exist to prevent the extending our establishment and availing ourselves of the labours of an in- creaaed number of hands. v. Ir; Please give insertion to the following few remarks in your useful aper : here are some poop e who are given to be- lieve that they have somethin great in sonic- thing new. A few days ago was somewhat amused and not a little surprised at the perusal of Mr. Stark’s Report of the District Schools, of the Island. For many years I have had some at the residence of the bride, Mr. John M‘l..itugli|an, rtunities of knowing the condition of both to Marga 0 Schiicls and Teachers around me, and have often been at the examination of the School in my neighbourhood, (New Glasgow,) and always observed it to be in a healthy and thriving con- dition, to the satisfaction of all concerned. The present report of this School especially is culpably incorrect, both in regard to the num- ber of scholars studying, their respective branches. as well as the general bearing of all the children. Supposing, that a triflin mis- understanding ahou d exist between the isitcr and the Teacher, is it candid that his School should be erroneously reported on that account. Teachers whose services have been appreciated for some years in intelligent communities and whose labours were commended by his prede- cessor, are sullicisnt evidences to prove this man's Be rt in too many instances uite re- versed. on are aware Mr. Editor, tint Mr. Stark receives the amount of £200 Salary as_n Visitor ofschools, and the sum of .9100 more a turer on Agriculture. 1 have heard him lecture on this subject, but in such style as a school boy could read out of Professor Jebnson’s Lectures on Agricultural Chemiatr , without ever explaining it to the level of t people's capacity ‘to understand.
