Jesus was the most religious man, and the Jews were ‘chosen by God to be the most religious papple ever in the world. As the Romans exem- plified organlzation and government and the Greeks art and culture, so the Jews exemplified religion and worship, which had been given them by revelation from God Himself. And all this system of religion and worship pointed to and foreshadow- ed the coming of our Saviour. Every sacrifice offered to God by the Jews in the temple was a type of the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross oi Calvary. Yet when Jesus came these Jewish people instead of receivng Him as their Messiah denounce Him as an lmbostor. and. crucified What was the trouble? We _must go back a little and ask “what 1S re- Lgion?" Jesus said: "I came that ye might have liie and have it more abundantly." A full life-spirit. bouy mind-that is the purpose of relig- ion. But to develop this liie which Christ came to give us. we must fol- low certain rules, just as every activ- ity of life has its rules which may not be transgressed. So Goo laid down in the Old Testament certain laws. statutes and ordinances-e. chart ior life. For a while the Jews kept these regulations in the spirit in which they were meant to be kept. but as time went on they forgot the object of them—the abundant liie-and looked only to the stricter observ- ance of the laws and statutes them- selves, which they multiplied and made even more burdensome. The speaker went on to give illus- trations shouung how the Jewish people fell into this error. When Christ came there was such an accumulation of rules and regula- tions that liie was chained and burdened rather than nourished and el d. So the Jews to dis- cern their Lord and Saviour, and led Him to judgment add the Cross. The religious leaders and peo- ple of the day reviled Him as the most anti-rel ious man that ever lived.
