on Monday and was sitting up for a
time. It is expected she will remain
in Paris until the king's return, and

It is customary for some people tc
talk about Venlce_a_s_old and infinite-
ly sad, to think of it stirring alone
meditating on its past glories; and
all the time at workchanglng the
landscape and its people to the new
life of a modern world.

are building, not gondolas, but big
iron steamers; and if you live there
you must look at the white -dome of
the Salute through the trailing Bmokq
of the steamship stack.
And this aspect of Venice has n
special beauty, and why should one
shut one’s eyes to it? There is one
thing certain, that the more your
life is cast to bring you in touch
with the people 'of Venice who work,
the more you will understand Venice
of today.
