CO-EDUCATION We all know that girls are quicker Than our sex, W hose sculls are t ucker, While we find the mea are deeper, And more logical in mind ; * Heiplk es each wi thor i t th ¢ T hey would learn from one pcan el And the girls crow meek but massive | While the bovs become refined ther, Men, in making a selection Of a maiden whose affec tion Is to make their life worth living, Judge by pretty ways alone. They are won by gracefal vesture, Or by perfect form and gesture, And the brain their love possesses Is among the things unkaoown. But in college thrown together Each would soon discover whether, Underneath veneer and varnish, There was something to respect, Sterling worth instead of beauty, Faith unspotted, duty, These and other homely virtues, Might our heads and hearts direct. ; ° iwove ot But to crown the scene elysian, Gracefully across my vision Flit the fairy forms of maidens, Whe are children of cur halls ; In the past the inspiration, In the future the salvation Of the men of trath and honor, Reared within these classic walls, They have joined the number legion, Who in every land and region For a time are knit together In the common bond of thought ; And the brotherhood is strengthened; And its days on earth are lengthened, By this simple deed of justice, Over which our age has foug ght. Thus amid the future ages, When the philosophers and sages Seek to find some old inscription Which shall give the world our fame ; They might read in burning letters, Here where loosened old-time fetters, And each stone waa made forever Fragrant with a woman's name. —C'lasa- ‘day Poem, -_-o-- CURRENT NOTES. One of the steamers engaged in the Menhaden tishery reports its catch for the season, to July 27, to be 2,040,000 fish. Halifax expects to doa good trade with the West, in boneless codfish. The fish are carefully curel, boned and} packed in in 40 lb boxes. Several heavy orders have been shipped to Chicago. The summer season is not much more | than half over, yet the deaths that have occurred from drowning appears al- ready to have reached a large figure. For ihe most part the loss of liie from this cause Was due to a disreyard of cer- tain neecesary precautions that without doubt, were very well known to the victims. Sometimes, as in the case of | Captain Webb, who was drowed recent- ly «at Niagara, lives have been lost| throngh some foolhardy aet, attempted | either tor the sake of notoriety or from loveof daring. If no other results foliowed such actsthan the death of those who commit them it would indeed | be well. This, however, is not often the case, for sudden deaths sometimes inflicts great distress on dependant ones. This consideration alone shouid serve 48 & Warning to people to exercise great care when in water. There is probably nothing that is annoying to a ship-master than the dis- covery at the beginning of a voyage that some of his crew are incapable of properly performing their duties. This happens not infrequently and is either alack of knowledge on the partof the men of their work, or, as is most often the case, by reason of disease which renders the men almost equally unfit to perform the service required of them. A voyage for this reason is sometimes very greatly delayed and the vessel subject to expense through having to ut back to port for a new crew. There is no doubt but that these annoyances could .be stopped in part, at least, if ship-masters would give some attention to the selection of their crews. Indeed it is not just to the owners of the vessel as well as thatof a public servant, should see to it that his vessel is pro- perly equipped in respect to her crew. fe would be amply repaid for doing this through the absence of many annoyances to him on shipboard and s: the increased safety of the proper ty | commiited to his charge, > + <> — —— -— fhe Great French Remedy, LeDuc’s Periodical Pills.
