I. 8. Johnson & Co., Boston, Masa A CUNNING MULE. It Mid on Steamer Day When Work Was Increased. The laziest mule in all California ts } the one on the Farallon Islands that be- | longs to the | the successor of the late lighthouse keepers. He ts lamented ‘‘ Jer- sey,’’ and is known to his owners as “Patsey.’’ In many ways he is a smart mule, but he devotes most of his talents to devising means to avoid the little work that is required of him. The strange thing about his plan is that he goes to more work to avoid work than it would take him to do it. Patsey has been ” on the island for about three years, and from the start seemed pleased with his home. He was brought out on the steamer Madrona, and at once given full liberty. He roamed over the island at will, and as no work was required of him he was the happiest mule in the stall. But a day came when Patsey was not happy. It was after he had been on the island three months, and the Madrona came back on her quarterly visit. He then found out what he was there for. As soon as the supplies were landed on the wharf Patsey had to haul them to the lighthouse. And, O, what hard work he found it, after his three months’ va- eation, Every pound was a ton, and his anwillingness made it about three. He has never forgotten that day. The next time the Madrona came back Patsey was ready. The first visit of the steamer made such an impression on him that he even recognized the whistie as the sound came over the water through a thick bank of fog. When the supplies were on the landing Patsey was nowhere to be found. Search for him as they would, it was the next day before he was unwillingly at work. The next time the steamer came the keepers were ready for Patsey’s trick. As svon as he heard the whistle a shiver passed over him, and he started for one of the highest hills on the island, never stopping until he reached the top, all the time giving utterance to moans of an- guish. To climb to the summit was an awful task, and Patsey was wet with perspiration when he got there. Of course, Le was soop captured and brought back, and no doubt he found his work much harder for his unnecessary exer- cise. But it failed to cure him, and every steamer day the same performance has to be gone through with. On one oceasion the Madrona happened to be in the vicinity, possibly chasing an escaped whistling buoy, and gave a long blast of the whistle. Patsey was not ex- pecting anything of the kind, and at once became filled with fear. There was no time to climb the peak, so he flew over the rocks to a cave. The entrance was a rugged one, but Patsey managed to get in and, as he thought, was out of danger of work. It was two days before Patsey was missed, and a long search was necessary to find him. And then the fun com- menced. It was easy enough to get in, bat getting out was another matter. In fact, Patsey could not do it unaided, which was the reason he stayed there so long. Blocks and tackle and several hours hard work were necessary to get the frightened mule out. and when at iast he mustered courage to look at the whart and saw no boxes thers he was a most foolish-looking mule. Patsey has got so that he knows when the steamer is coming without hearing the whistle. He knows when it is due toaday. Two or three days before the time he will make himself scarce. On one occasion the vessel was several days in making a landing, and poor Patsey was nearly starved, but he never got hungry enough to overcome his aversion to work. The keepers get considerable amusement out of Patsey’s unwillingness to work. They don’t mind it particular- ly. as they know where to find him now. The general verdict of all visitors to the island is that Patsey should have been a tramp. Oid Cars av Summer Houses. When the harse cars throughout Con necticut cities were retired a few years ago, with the coming of the trolley, everybody wondered what would become of the 600 old cars that were on the hands of the street railway companies. No one would have guessed that the worn-out car would come to be the most salable thing in the market. Yet such is the case. The demand for them is overwhelming. The offices of the sta- tion agents are flooded with inquiries and one recent letter, from a woman, asked for the lowest prices on passenger cars; also, for a list of styles. These old cars never seem to come amiss. They are sold for summer shelters in rural dis- tricts, for hunter’s camps, for lodges by solitary lakes, for cabins on house boats, and, above all, for the homes of campers on the coast of Long Island Sonnd and its islands. They are found everywhere. Sometimes they form annexer to pre- tentious cottages, while in other places they are the only means of shelter, and are strung together like a vestibuled train. One summer party has arranged four of the cars in the form of a hollow square. A canvas awning covers the courtyard made by the cars, and a tall flagstaff rising from the center, com- pletes the pleasing establishment. One of the cars is used asa kitchen and work- shop, and the others are lounging, sleep- ing and reception rooms. Clever Japanese Gardeners. In districts in Japan where fruits and vegetables are liable to suffer from early spring frosts—or, to speak meteorologic- ally, late spring frosts—-they carefully preserve all the prunings of their trees and make heaps of them in various outlying portions of the orchards. When the frost likely to do injary is immin- ent, they start one of these brush fires in the direction from which the wind comes. They only make fire enough to make a smoke. To make a fire has a tendency to bring the cold into the or- chard rather than to keep it out. Heat rarifies or lightens the atmosphere, and the cold or heavier air presses forward into the vacuum made by the heat ex- panded. They depend on the smoke and not the heat for protection. She Resigned. “IT don’t know what we're coming to,"’ sald Mr. Cumrow, gloomily. “I guess I'll have to turn in and write my letters myself.”’ “Can't you employ an asked his wife. “I thought I had one. She came to work this morning, an’ when she sat down to the typewriter I says to her, — ne you to take down what ™m ng to dictate exactly as I ar ’ _ ‘*Wouldn’t she do it?”’ it, and said there was BO use tryin’ to hold the ition, ae she’d never learnt to sande } amabuensis?’’ Build Up, When the system is run down a person €comes an easy prey to Consumption or Scrofula. Many va!nable lives are saved by using Scoti’s Emulsion as soon as a de cline in health is observed. Is the X Rat Hurtful ¥ ’ The question whether the X rays have or have not a deleterious effect on the human body is being actively discussed. Tesla, on being interviewed on the sub- ject, says that instead of the rays being injurious, they are really healthful, and tend to build up the body. The discharge of the induction coil causes no ill-effects, inasmuch as it slmpty generates ozone, a substance which is exhilarating as well as disinfecting. Tesla is reported as stat- ing that in no case has the effoct of the rays ever been injurious, and that in ex- perimenting with the Roentgen rays it has been found that while the distribu- tion of the ozone within tho body may have a slight effect, it is only in cases where the body has been subjected to the rays for hours. On the other hand, great numbers of scientists and others, it is now asserted, have been prostrated [som the assiduity with which they have fol- lowed up their experiments with the X rays, and one professor iu a Missouri university is said to have died from ex- haustion caused by his unremitting study of the subject. Great numbers of letters bearing testimony to the powerful aud in many cases painful effect of exposure to the rays are being sent to the electri- cal journals. One writer says that while attending to the testing of the tubes he noticed a peculiar itching and burning in his left hand, which he thought was caused by poisoning with chemicals. The skin assumed a dark red color; it be- came hard and glossy, and finally began to peel off. There was a sort of dead feel- ing in the finger nails, ‘‘as if they had been pounded with a hammer,’’ In other cases, the skin has turned brown and hard, and blisters have been raised on the fingers, as from exposure to sevore neat. Asa matter of fact, no one yet knows the why and wherefore of these phenomena, and 8 reputation awaits the ‘nan who will turn from the photo- graphy of bones and bullets to the stady wf the puysiological effects of the X rny, ind wiil give the world a scientific ana thorough exposition of the snbjecs.
