That Canadian Jumbermen’s employes now, thanks to the tariff, live npon whole- some Canadian beet, instead of upon Chi- cago mes pork ae fourm rly does not ap peal tothe Globe as something to be looks upon the pork tariff as an effort to help the producers of pork at the expense of the lumbermen, which is lamentable. A friendly feeling for the Americans would prompt the or- gan to throw down the tariff, hand over ntry to the Chicago pork packers industry somewhere And the cou od let the native pork packing PG te thereen y yet the chief Opposition organ is reaching yut a friendly hand to the Patrens, who raise hogs aad know that the tariff this respect has benefitted them. They might prefer to see Chicago pork coming in free wo feed the people, avd their own pork left upon their hands, but we doubt it. . If the lumbermen themselves were consulted, we think that they would decide in favor of fresh Canadian beef, rather then go back to foreign fat pork, even though to them it may go under the seductive name of “spring chicken.” But the duty does not grati*y pork raisers in securing the home market for their superior product, but the cattle raisers will approve of it when they find that it creates a demand for stock in the lumbering camps. There are upwards of 6,000 men at work in the woods on the upper Ottawa. We ask the Globe is it not better, regarded from the standpoint of the general good, that these men should be fed on the products of Canadian farms, that our cattle-raisers should find with them a brisk market for home-bred stock, than that their principal food-supply should come from a foreign country, to the advantage of the foreign producer The lumbermen prefer fresh beef to mess pork. tl mit-owners find it cheaper to provide beef, and the stock-raisers, the railways, the drovers and steamboat own- ers benefit by the trade which has been created and keep money in circulation. Speaking on this subject, the Chatham Planet pronounces the following sensible opinion . “Not only bas the duty retained the home market to the Canadian hog breeder and packer, stimulated the indus- try and kept quotations to the farmers al a profitable level, but it bas given the cou- sumer a far better quality of hog pro- ducts and has not enhanced to him the price thereof. The Planet hae it on the word of a loca! dealer ond packer, whose sympathies are not with the Con- servative Party nor his trade notions im- bibed from N. P. doctrine, that the pork ‘uties are of decided advantage both to producer and consumer in this country, and their remova) would be fraught with danger to one of the most important in- dustries in the country.” BID A FOND ADIEU To that Shabby, Lll-fitting Suit of Yours, and be Dressed in one of our NOBBY TWEED SUITS, WHICH I8 THE We carry all & CO. which he will dispose of at GALL AND BUY A COAL HO ‘J.
