Through these men they decide the issues placed before them The people are free to think through those issuu. free to ex- press their questlonings and con- cluslons. free to criticize their rul- ers and to replace t.hem.and ready to submit to the authority of those who are chosen by the majority. The campaign may be hot and the differences serious, but the moment that the votes are count- ed. the victors are accepted as the heads or the nation. when Sir Wilfrid Laurier visited British Columbia in the long ago. the Conservative Premier of that Province issued is statement to this effect: "It is not the leader of the Liberal Party who is visiting our Province but the Prime Minister of the Dominion. and everything that this government can do for him is at his disposal during his stay among us." It is this readiness to bow to the will of the people as a whole which makes our political system a success. These rights an privileges of 11 free people did not simply hap- pcii; they are the result of the struggle of the centuries. This conflict has its heroes and martyrs -men and women who valued lib- erty more than life and put all they had and all they were into the realization of their ideals. Inch by inch the heritage they have bequeathed to us was wrest- ed from the tyrants of their time. And they add to their gift this warning: Rights unused atrophy, and rights misused are forfeited. O O O The loss of their liberties byl many nations of our time is a irightful confirmation of the truth of their warning. Yet the danger before us is that so many of our .people take their privileges for granted. They have never known any other system, and they are too accustomed to their liberties to appreciate them. The number of citizens who will not even vote is n reproach to our civilization. The first truth to be kept in mind is thls:,The ruler. by what- ever method appointed. is com- missioned to establish the law and do the will of God. We elect rep- resentatives. not delegates. We choose men to do the right as they see it, and to do it with all their might. It is important to know the principles and policies for ST. JOHN'S CHURCH. Some years ago the newly elect- ed mayor of a certain town de- clared: "I am here to carry out the wishes of those who elected me." From the viewpoint of the Bible. that was heresy of is nox- ious type. The moment that the ruler of any group of citzens is in. office. he is in duty bound to do. the will of God, the Source of all authority. 0 I 0 St. Paul has written as follow: under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: "There is no authority ex- cept from God. and those that ex- ist have been instituted by God." Hence he adds: "Therefore one must be subject. not qnly to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscieiice...Payrall of them their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is dug. respect. to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due." In the light of inspired words like these. what about the current abuse of public men? When. therefore. a government calls for an election. they hand back to the men who chase them the authority and powers entrust- ed to them. and ask for the people's confirmation of their ad- miration. They are aware that the citizens are free to repudiate them if they will. Not only free. but under a solemn obligation to call them to account for what they have done. If a party or individ- ual has failed to keep the trust which I committed to him by my vote. it is my duty to express my disapproval in action at the polls. It, is equally my duty to renew my support when a government has kept the faith. A Province or country is responsible for what it tolerates as well as for does. and the Judge. of all earth takes account of it. - So often in a great debate such as is now being conducted through- out Ontario. people forget the Golden Rule-to do to others as we would have them )do to us. What are the things then resent in such a controversy? Personal abuse. of course. Many good men with great capacity for service are kept. out of public life by the wanton abuse to which those who would serve their people are subjected. The imputing to those who would of motives differ from us. Attributing to opponents views which they would disown. Charges which have not been provcii and which the people charged say cannot be proven. The -malicious spirit In all its forms and phases. We are aware that. human na- ture belng what it. is, many polit- ical gatherings are not Sunday schools. A famous politician of the last generation remarked: "Elec- tions are not won with prayers." And yet. and yet-when our free institutions are what we claim, the will of the Supreme Ruler either governs or ove'rrules our use of them. and prayer for all engaged in them is a Chrlstianis opportun- ity and obligation. By all means. think through the Issue before you in this hour; then in reaching ycur decision. consider the will of God and plead for His guidance. Much is being said about Chris- tian cilizcnslilp; here is a Chris- tian citizen's supreme opportunity, the foundation of everything else. , IN MEMORIAM In loving memory DIAOIIP dear Services for Sunday.
