U8. Isuusitcs or Ll‘I“l'l.l 'I‘iimoo.—It is remarkable how little is required to excite u love of horticultural pursuits, even in situations supposed to deaden the higher class of emotions. A story is told of a whole village in the Highlands being stimu- lated to enter on a course of improvement, from the simple circumstance ofa lady one day ex reusing her admiration of a single marigo d,‘ which grew in the neglected garden of one of the cottagers. “Is it posible,” thought the proprietor of this little flower, “that anything I have in my poor garden is worthy of the approval of a lady? f so, I will endeavour to make things bet- ter; I will try my hand at a few more How- ers." Thus reasoning, the cottager began to occup himself in his garden; neigh- bours fol owed his example ; a spirit of ri- valry was begun, and lo ! in a short time, the whole village, interior and exterior, as- sumed quite an improved aspect-clean doorwa s, walls nicely decorated with flow- ers, an a general advancement in all mat- ters of taste. Now, this anecdote, which rests on authority, atfords a pretty fair specimen of what may be done by a little judiciously administered approbation acting upon a spirit of honourable competition. —Pltiladelpltio Port. DANGIR or Suizrtso IN Mi:t:'ri:vo.—In one of our churches, an old gentleman, a worthy gentleman of the Christian per-sun- sion fell asleep and began dreaming that he was on a hunting excursion. All ofa sud- den and to the astonishment of everybody, he bellowed out;— “Fetch him, Dash! a glorious shot—three woodcocks with one barrel! hurrah for me;" and he rose up from his seat and cheered lustily. He woke himself by his hallooing, and immediately seized his hat and walked out, blushing like a rod pepper.—-Cincinnati paper Pour JAcxsoit.—-The anecdote told of Cook having overlooked this harbour is worth re- lating. One day whilst the great navigator was at inner in his cabin, a seaman of the name of Jackson happened to have the look- out at the masthead, and seeing the narrow opening now termed “Sydney Heads, ” forth- with announced a harbour on the larboard beam.—The intelligence was duly conveyed to Captain Cook, who was in no great hurry to quit his dinner, and when he did so the entrance to the harbour, from the speed with which the ship was going through the water, was nearly shut in. Being unable to see any of the indications which would have led him to suspect the presence of a harbour of any magnitude, Captain Cook is said to have soundly rated the seaman at the mast- head for his false report, whilst the man as firmly adhered to his statement. “ Well,” said the commander with a sneer, “ we will call the harbour by your name, Port J ackson;’ and as port J acksoii it was marked down in the ships’s log, with the additional appellation of “ boat harbour. The vigil- ance of the seaman was thus unconsciously rewarded by his name becoming immortaliz- ed.—Gold Colonies of fluslralia NATURAL Gss.—The Holmes Counly(Ohio) Farmer states that a wonderful natural curiosity has been discovered in that county, in the shape of natural gas The discovery was made on the farm of a Pnrdy, some eight or ten rods south of the house, in a curious kind of earth resembling dark sawdust. The owner, for years, has been aware of the existence of some wonderful phenomena. The place on which the dis- covery has been made, has been cultivated for a number of years, and it has been ob- served that in a number of places every thing planted or sown, and all kinds of vegetation, would dwindle and die, and seemingly turn up. Alter the late rains, the water was discovered to be agitated, and to bubble up in a number of places, which led Mr. Purdy and others to experi- ment, by collecting a bottle of this gas and self it on fire. When the instant a lighted match was touched to it, the vapour ignited, and sent the bottle whizzing through the house. - Discovuitv or ROMAN Msiui.s.—Recent- ly, as a young irl was d' ging in the garden of a farm at t. Paul e Varax, (Ain,) in France, she turned up a Roman tile, under whic was a vase full of medals, but so corroded and stuck together, that it was necessary to break the vessel to get them out. he medals were found to be four hundred in number, nineteen of them in bronze, and the rest in silver. Twenty-five of thsni, on being cleaned, were found to were the elligy and name of the Roman mporors Alexander Severus, Maximus, Gordian, Philip, Decius, and Gallien, who succeeded each other from the commence- ment to the middle of the third century, (from 292 to $8 alter Christ.) The same vase coatainod jewels, two chains, and sev- ou rings in gold, in a perfect state of reser- vation. There were also two nec aces. Ono, formed of fine rings, is in perfect pre- servation. It is terminated by a small or- nament like a wheel, the centre of which is formed of on emerald, with a old clasp, similar to those now in use. e oth which is incomplete, is ornamented with small stones, or pieces of glass.
