MARCH. 7, 1901. _ ' _ 4 At a recent meeting of the Dominion Alliance in Mont-real_ the committee on legislation reported among other things in favor of applying to the Dominion 'Parliament to enlarge and extend the scope of the Scott Act. They recommend that it be so extended as to apply to an entire Province or to groups of counties and cities, that n0 wholesale licenses he permitted where the Act is in force. and that amendments be made to secure its better enforcement. The 'Montreal Wit- ness speaks of the action ot the Alliance in deviatlng nominally at least, from thc platform of total prohibition and support ing a scheme for an amended Scott Act,as “a new departure.” It adds that on all sides the view was expressed that the temperance people had made a serious mistake when they allowed the Scott Act to become a dead letter. The Examiner yestei day transferred to its editorial page the headlines from one of Tea GU.u¢nIaN’s news columns. It _was not a particularly good night for headings with us when the lines were prepared, but none the less when laid alongside ot the rather depressing editor- ial matter of the Examiner they glitter was a happy thought iii our contemporary to brighten one of its pages in this way. In the came connection the poet-editor cf thellxaminer elves an intimation that _ lunar influences might sometimes operate as in inspiration to poetic genius. This impression was probably derived from the coincidence of the harvest moon and* the blueberry season. While abroad on his favorite feeding ground, as the moon shone brightly night after night on the Wellington plains, the Examiner poet may have mistaken the source of his inspire-‘ tion and thought it came from above‘ when it really came from below-in hand- fun. ii was me blueb¢n~l¢»,b»e¢h¢r.
