in temperature, and that the rain fell
through a -colder stratum, becoming
chilled to freezing temperature, but
remaining liquid until the drop wa8
deformed by striking a resisting body.

inghis friend. Miss. Bessie Hall, of
Johnson berg, Pa. , across a large crevice
Just as the young lady stepped. the
Jam parted at her feet, and down she
went. Her escort firmly clung to hor
hand,and pulled her up out of her
dangerous position, and none too soon,
forthe big ics .iield closed, the large
crevice- grinding both sides that came
into contact, into powder. Down the
pair_went on the moving ice. Harry
Williams, of the Hotel Lafayette, heed-
ed s rescuing party who descended _a
ramshackle staircase coated with ice,
and gave them valuable assistance in
sinking their trip along the rugged and
slippery rocks to the incline railways,
which they ascended. The ice yesterday
afternoon was so high it struck lhsiroii
girders of the, carriage steel arch bridge
with tremendous fcrce. and several of
'those who were on the ice at the time
caught the iron girders on the way.aud
thus saved themselves. The Maid of
the Mist docks, ticket ollice, and she ls
are completely wrecked with the 'force
of ice, which has buried them out of
sight. The less will be several thou-
sand dollars.
