BITER BITTEN, My uncle, Sir Charles Weatheringsy, was n old gentleman who owned & arge estate In Berkshire, and was very much respected by the people of his neighbor hood He was kind and in- | fulgent to his tenants, many of whom | ould sacrifice their lives at any time | Yo be of serve to him. The country gentry miles around were on the uost intimate terms with him, and x11 spoke of him in pratse, There was One man, however, for whom my uncle had a decided anti- pathy That was the Reverend B. Uncle was a & od but he had this took a dislike man in most respects, me failing—if he once to a man he never forgot it; and on this occasion his first impulse drove him to seek revenge upon the Reverend Mr. Caldwell, At this time, in England, sectarian- ism was very much looked down upon by the Episcopal church, and es the Iteverend Mr, Caldwell wae a rigid Episcopalian, my uncle’s plan Of an- nmoyance was a terrible tria] to the ven- ble gentleman who had been his amily minister for twenty years, The Episcopal church was within fifty yards of my uncle’s estate, and was he place of worship the family mad ever attended, therefore it was 4 serious affair to be at enmity with the rector. But uncle was equal to the pocasion. He invited several proml- nent Methodist ministers to come on a visit, and, very much to their sur- prise, offered to give them the ground am which to build a large church. Of course this ptece of magnanimity was eagerly accepted, and drew down upom his head the everlasting thanks xt the whole denomination. The work was commenced at once, and was soon completed, under the care of the newly made convert, who took particular pains to have the building erected im full view of the Episcopal rectory, Little did the Methodists know with what malignant satisfaction the pro- jector of this scheme gloated Over the success of his plot, and the terrible anguish of spirit that the Reverend Mr, Caldwell suffered then and during the remainder of his life. A brilliant young minister was duly installed im the new church ,and soon became the spiritual light of the dis- trict over which he presided. He was a bright, handsome young man, and had the goood fortune to be unmar- ried. This made him a genera] favor- ite at my unele’s house, for reasons which will appear presently. My uncle hed a family of sixteen children, three of whom were daugh- only ters, The youngest was by far the most beautiful, and was her father’s favorite, a fact which ke took special ‘are to show; but she inherited a strong will, and, notwithstanding my uncle's ove for her, he had serious misgivings ‘hat she would bring disgrace upon wrself and her family. The young Methodist minister was 20t slow to perceive the difference be- vcen Maud and her sisters; Dut al- hovgh he couldn't help seeing tha, ither Grace or Laura had the advan of being more refined end better disposition, yet Maud inspired a ve in his breast stronger than he iad ever felt for any other woman, Little by little this acquaintance be- twecen the Reverend John Young and faud ripened and grew into an in- tense mutual love, But the course of true love ncver lid run smoothly, and the present ease as no exception to the general rule, for Maud was already betrothed te yne of the wealthiest young men in terkshire, This arrangement was uade by the parents of both, and In England, among rich families, disobe- Jience to parental authority means something serious, so dear little Maud aad trouble in anticipation if she fa- vorel Mr. Young’s suit, ege Young was very diplomatic, how- *ver, and he contrived to make love to Maud in a way that completely affied father and sisters, and he con- tinued to visit the house and retain the friendship of the whole family un- ler a cloak of religion which passed ag an excuse for all his actions, Everything scemed to favour the lovers for a time, but a seene took place one morning before Maud and ner father which threatened to mar the pleasure cf her future meetings with Mr. Young. “My dear, it is now time for you to name some definite day for your wedding,”’ her father said, in a very soaxing tone, Maud was puzzled, but wag too wise to say or do anything that would give the old gentleman room for suspicion, o she feigned surprise, and answered: ““Oh, dear papa, do not press the matter £0 soon; you know I am too young to be married, and it would only be an act of justice to let me wait, at least six months, before place ing me at the head of a house, with all the cares and troubles of a wife tc bear.” “Humbug! sensible w Cares and troubles! A man should never talk in that way. Your mother was married when she was eighteen, and never re- gretited it, I flatter myself. Now, Maud, this is all nonsense, for you to desire further delay, Charles has been quite anxious of late, and he vows that he won't wait any longer.” “Well, dear papa, if you are in such a hurry to get rid of me I must sub- mit; but you must give me a month or you know it will take all 9! that lime to get my wedding dresses made.” “Ah, that’s better. You are a dear, sensible girl, and you shall have a whole month, whether Charles likes it 2 not.” And with a parting kiss, daughter separated, satisfied.
