On the electoral list of St.John for
the purpose of civic elections there are
9,237 names. But only those per-
sons who have paid their civic taxes
are permitted to vote for the mayor-
alty and aldermanic candidates. On
account of non-payment 3,913 names

As will be remembered Mr. Blair’s`
"original proposition for the purchase,
ofthe Drummond County railway,
was rejected by the Senateafter which,
the government took power to lease
the road and utilise it as a means of _
extending the Intercolonial to Mon-
treal. Mr. Blair has now again given
notice of a resolution to purchase the
road, this time for $1,600,000. From
this is to be deducted the subsidies
paid for the completion of the Drum-
mond road, which was incomplete by
some 40 miles when the Erst proposal
was made to purchase it. It is very
doubtful whether the objections of
the Senate to the purchase have yet
been overcome, and there may be a
