The following primary lodges which comprise the District Lodge, viz: Serirl Lodge located at Searletown; Victoria Lodge located at Tryon; Lorne Lodge, located at DeSable; Derry Lodge; New Argyle; and Prince Arthur, located at Crapaud were all well represented. After the opening ceremonies were concluded business in connection with the District was ,taken up and the reports from Masters of the primary lodges were encouraging. After the business was transacted lodge ad-A journed for one hour for refreshments. The Brethren Were invited to the Lower Hall where the District Master and his amiable partner had provided the good things which make men smile who travel along distance. His presence meant comfort and gladness to many a. sick and dying warrior. Every one who heard him lecture in St. James`s Me‘- hodist church last night gottheir moncy‘s worth. For two hours and a half the chaplain feasted his audience, with de- scriptive eloqueuce such as few of them had ever heard before. There was never a. moment in all that lonir lecture that the interest of the vast throng which illled the church Bagged. The lecturer saw the scenes over again as he related them, and _ he made hishearers seethem in a most vivid. and 'realistic manner.-Montreal Witness.-Chaplain Lane will lecture in First Methodist church on Feb. 4th. A Lanes and appreciative audience gathered in the Mt. Herbert Hall on Satu rdsy evening last to hear Mr. F. B. McRae tell thestory of the South African War. He nrst briefly revealed the history of Briton and Boer during the past century and each time he had reached the actual outbreak of hostilities the meeting became deeply interested.By the aid of splendid charts to show the lines of advance of the Boer and British, the position of Cronje and Roberts’ plan of capturing him, and the line of the British march to Bloemfontein. Mr. McRae is s good platform speaker, and, he is representative of the Orange Canadian Soldier. It can be readily understood that the highest position which our Colonials occupied among the crack Imperial regiments was due to their intellectual as well as to their physical ability. g Mr John Wheatley’s annual prize competition closed on 31st December, 1900. It will be seen below the quality was far superiorto that of 'last year, and, the quantity was much larger on the first opening days.
